IPL 2023: Growing injury to pacers leaves Chennai Super Kings in tight corner
While the batting is still holding up, what's really hurting CSK is the injury to their key pace bowlers. Sisanda Magala, their new death bowling expert from South Africa, suffered a split webbing while taking a catch off R Ashwin's bowling on Wednesday and coach Stephen Fleming feels he will be out for at least two weeks.

Before that, CSK had their premier paceman Deepak Chahar ruled out for the near future with a hamstring pull. Left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary, who had shaped up well in the last IPL, has already been ruled out while Simarjeet Singh, another interesting prospect, is also likely to take a minimum of 10 more days to be back in action.
Ben Stokes, meanwhile, has suffered a toe injury that kept him out of the last two games. "He is recovering day by day and we will have to see how he shapes up," Fleming said.

Even if he gets fit, it is a matter of conjecture whether Stokes will bowl again in IPL, especially with the Ashes just round the corner. "We are really operating on thin resources. Some of our bowlers are coming on the back of big domestic seasons and are a little broken," Fleming said.
While playing at Chepauk, the injury woes are going to be less of an issue because the pitch will be slow and spin-friendly and there are good spinners in their ranks. But on good batting pitches, the challenge will be immense.

KOLKATA: Some knocks find place in cricket record books while others reside in people's heart. Rinku Singh's last-over heroics against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad perhaps will feature in both categories in the years to come.
The middle-order batter's five sixes in as many balls have not already become the talk of this IPL but it has also injected an air of confidence in the Kolkata Knight Riders camp. Sunrisers Hyderabad will have to tick all the boxes in order to get maximum points against an upbeat KKR at the Eden Gardens here on Friday.
IPL 2023 SCHEDULE | IPL 2023 POINTS TABLE
KKR coach Chandrakanth Pandit must be happy to see a new hero emerging from his playing XI every day. While Shardul Thakur and Suyash Sharma turned the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, it was Rinku and Venkatesh Iyer who took the side home against GT in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
For a change, no one is complaining that Andre Russell has failed to fire so far as for the time being, the much talked about KKR's over dependence on the West Indian all-rounder seems to have taken a backseat.
The Knights will relish their chances at home where their spinners - Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy and Sharma - are expected to get some assistance.
However, SRH have the best expertise to tackle that threat as their spin bowling coach Muttiah Muralitharan was seen rolling the arm in the nets during a practice session.
The team will also hope Mayank Markande, who did the maximum damage against Punjab Kings, picking up four for 15 in the last match, gets good support from Washington Sundar who has remained wicketless so far in three matches. England spinner Adil Rashid too has looked ordinary.
SRH's batting has looked brittle with the team unable to put up even 150 runs so far. KKR on the other hand have already posted two 200 plus scores, one while defending and the other while chasing. The hosts, however, still need better starts as they have lost the maximum number of wickets in the powerplay.
Interestingly, KKR also have the maximum options upfront with England's Jason Roy and Bangladesh's Litton Das joining the side. It remains to be seen whether KKR will try out their fourth opening pair in as many games or will go in with the winning combination.
SRH's main problem seems to be the inability of their key players to deliver so far. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar has looked a pale shadow of his earlier days, skipper Aiden Markram and Harry Brook have failed to live up to their reputations.
The captain, however, was not worried about that and wanted to focus on the team game. "Our team does not completely rely on one or two players but on the squad as a whole to win games," Markram said. "It's important to contribute even in small phases in a T20 game and our experienced players know that well," he stated.
Back-to-back wins will provide wind to SRH's campaign, but KKR look better balanced to record a hat-trick of victories before playing big away games against Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals next week.
