Making investments and I want your thoughts on Bonds

I'm reading about bonds and I don't know much yet... The reason why I bring it up at all is because I'm making plans on investing my money into income generating assets, bonds have come up and in the past I received negative feedback about them. My question is: Are all bonds income generating and if so how often is there pay out? I know this info is on the net and I'm currently researching investing in general. I'd like some feedback from my Steemit peers.
