I would assume that there is a surge of interest from newbies because of all the great news surrounding the currency and site. The flow of new people to the site may have temporarily overwhelmed it. It is also possible that now that Steemit is clearly an up and coming social media player that it has caught the attention of malicious actors who like to "attack" sites. The site is back online so no matter what happened Steemit passed the test.
