No, it's not a rented service. They're radio pagers: When we have a call they not only beep to alert us, but we get a voice message from the dispatcher advising what the call is. We can then leave them on "open", to get updated information while we're responding to the station. Also, they're much more rugged than cell phones! Better protected from smoke, heat, water, and so on.
Ok, I understand. Its just that... Never mind, I guess its just that we gernans are always thinking practical (politicians excluded).
Lets say, I just hope the people wearing those devices are same as resistant against fumes, heat and water than the device itself. :)
Most of us wear them on our belts under our protective clothing -- so they're more likely to be damaged by sweat than anything else! For those of us who don't wear portable radios, they let us hear the radio traffic from inside and outside the building -- a nice safety tool. Of course, we have at least one member with a radio on each crew.
