Many people ask me why I draw and paint sexual figures or very intimate poses. The answer is quite simple: because I enjoy painting them.

I’ve always been fascinated by the human figure and abstract work although I never explored the two together until my “Two Lovers” painting. It was clear to me I wanted to go in this direction as I found a subject matter I was fascinated with and a palette and painting process I enjoyed. “Two Lovers” was painted quickly with a butter knife and palette knives. At times I was even frustrated with the knives and ended up using my fingers. I was extremely pleased with the result; strokes were visible, the two bodies almost seemed as one and the genderless quality of the piece was striking. I went through a purple-blue period in the next paintings I made and now I’m experimenting with brighter colours specifically in my watercolour paintings. Although I have been creating more realistic work, I certainly plan on making much more abstract pieces for upcoming projects.

My drawings on the other hand are mainly nude female figures. This stemmed from “Candy” a painting I made in 2014 for a Toronto group art exhibition about beauty. It was the first time I painting the female figure in a sexual pose. I was mainly inspired by dance (a̶n̶d̶ ̶a̶ ̶c̶o̶n̶v̶e̶r̶s̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶a̶b̶o̶u̶t̶ ̶s̶t̶r̶i̶p̶ ̶c̶l̶u̶b̶s̶). I made 3 other paintings similar to Candy and called them my Yellow Sexy Ladies. The attention they received was extremely positive and I loved portraying the female figure in beautiful poses.

Soon after, I experimented with female figures in abstract form by combining the sexual nude poses in my drawings with the abstract quality of my paintings.

So to answer the question again; I enjoy working in this subject matter, I’ve found a subject matter that I am fascinated with, provides me so much room to explore and quite frankly, I think we are all a romantic. Some may say that my art is too explicit, some may love my work and some may even nominate my work for awards. Whatever the response, any reaction is great.
