I am a Super(star)hero
I stop petty fights before they turn into full blown battles.
I have a super vision. I can see from different angles and corners. I can see missing pencils, hiding children, winking eyes, smiling lips and sleeping souls.
I have a built-in lie detector test. I can see through lying eyes.
I cure painful booboos with cotton and betadine.
I give super hugs that power up tired kiddos.
I empower small people to read.
I equip them with confidence to face the world.
I mold young minds to be creative and analytical.
I make a difference in their lives (well, at least I’m trying to).
I teach. That’s my superpower.
That’s right. I am a teacher and every teacher is a superhero without the cape (well, we can choose to wear one every now and then). I am a teacher by profession and by passion. I am one of the blessed ones who do not just earn a living from what they are passionate about and skilled to do but actually live a full life. Yes, my pocket may not always be full but my heart is.
I used to work in a multinational shipping company as an HR Training specialist. I thought I was doing good. I was earning a good amount salary and I was able to buy things that I wanted. I was able to travel and be exposed to various cultures. I met high profile and intellectual professionals. It was worthwhile. I helped a few. I learned a lot. I gained valuable experiences that taught me so much about life. But by the grace of God, He showed me that that wasn’t the life for me. He led me out of that multinational company into a multinational classroom.
It was a struggle at first. But slowly I realized, there is a bigger world waiting for me in that smaller classroom. I may not have been able to travel often that year but I was exposed to the various cultures of my students. I did not meet a lot of professionals but I was making those little ones to be professionals in the future. I may not have much in my pocket but I was always able keep a smile in it. Small achievement of my students – words read, objects counted – was a reminder that the best things in life are not bought by money. My experience as a preschool teacher has taught me more so much more about life than any adult encounter could.
Now, I am teaching in a Christian school. It has been such a tremendous blessing to me to be working with colleagues who share the same faith and to be able to teach students not just academics but more so values based on the Word of God. It has been tough. There are struggles, the demands are physically exhausting and dealing with students can be very emotionally draining. But when I see lightbulb in their eyes, then it brightens up my day. When they come to me and mistakenly call me “mommy” it melts my heart. When they hug me, I am strengthened. When I hear their laughter, my heart bursts with joy. These simple things make me say, “I am living a full life. I am able to live my purpose. I am living a childhood dream to touch lives and make a difference.”
Teaching has made that dream come true. I am able to touch lives. But while being a teacher has given me this opportunity, I am more privilege to learn from my students. I always think, and am very grateful for it, that my students have taught me more about life than I could teach them. They have been my teachers in many different ways. They have touched my heart and forever made a difference in my life.
I love being a teacher even if it is a profession that does not really pay “well” it has priceless rewards. And I am a testament that, once you follow God’s calling for you, He will sustain every need. I may have not a competent salary but I have never lacked anything I needed. And I am thankful to the Lord for providing avenues like Steemit to earn more for wants and upcoming needs. Being introduced to this social media platform is another moment in my life where passion meets profit. I am a teacher and I love learning and sharing ideas. In fact, that is my life’s vision: to learn and share. I was so glad to find a social media platform where I could live this vision. I can once again share ideas through writing/blogging – something I missed doing. I am so excited for things to come and ideas I will gain by reading other blogs and feedback that I will be getting from this intellectual community. I also hope to be able to meet passionate teachers, by profession or by heart, from whom I will learn from and share experiences with. I am sure that this will help me grow professionally and personally.
