Hello World! - Sincerely, a Lady Computer Scientist
I’m in my early 30’s, and am a teacher, computer scientist, collector of degrees, mother to two sweet boys, and a wife to an awesome man. I enjoy learning new things, and tend to be quite ambitious in my endeavors. People describe me as enthusiastic, with a can-do attitude, and a lover of coffee
Teacher and Computer Scientist
As a certified teacher, I can teach computer science and mathematics at the secondary level, but I ended up working in industry, as a software developer specializing in data, after obtaining a masters degree in computer science. My teacher education wasn’t a complete waste as I believe it has made me a better parent, and a better mentor to interns that join the company I work at.
Mother
Becoming a mother was very challenging. I will throw it out there that I suffer from PCOS, and so much so that it causes infertility. Fortunately for us, there are some wonderful drugs that helped me get the plumbing working, and pop out a couple of kids. Parenting for my husband and I, is full of research, silliness, hugs and kisses, and wine. Lots of wine. After many years of education (10 years of post-secondary education to be exact), and finally obtaining my dream job, I am finally able to focus on building a great life for my family, by playing with slime, and building Lego sets.
Wife
My marriage has been something special and rare that doesn’t happen often. I started dating my husband when I was 17, married at 24, and we are approaching our 10 year wedding anniversary. We are not the same people we once were when we first met. We have grown as individuals, and we have grown closer together.
Cryptocurrency Side Hustler
When I finished my masters degree in October 2017, I started to dedicate my evenings to researching cryptocurrencies. I went from buying bitcoin, to casual day-trading, to mining and using profits to pay for a Disney World vacation (happening April 2018). If you like to know more about my cryptocurrency side hustle, see my post From Buying to Mining Bitcoin: A Canadian Journey Through Cryptocurrency. I will likely provide one-off posts on my journey through cryptocurrency.
Working Towards Sustainability
Sustainability is a concern of mine. The cost of living is increasing, housing market is outrageous, and food produce is becoming more expensive and less nutritious!
Lowering our costs of living so far has included purchasing an electric vehicle for my commute to work, pooling our resources with my parents by sharing a household. My parents provide home equity, and affordable child care services to my husband and I, and we provide a comfortable source of the income that the household utilizes. My parents were able to sell off their house in a hot market in a desirable subdivision, and together we purchased a tiny old home, further away from the city, in the countryside, on an acre of land. We have plans to tear down this house, and build a more suitable home for our family, all while living in trailers in our backyard. Should be an interesting adventure!
Once our new house is complete, we hope to heat and cool our home with geothermal technology, and achieve net metering with solar power. Net metering may be challenging with the amount of energy we consume because of mining cryptocurrency and charging an electric vehicle.
One of my favorite side projects at home, has been hydroponics! My kids help me put seeds in the little peat plugs, and we just watch the little plant babies grow! Check out my first hydroponic post regarding strawberries titled Hydroponic Strawberries, Part 1 - First 33 days! We have also started to build a raised garden bed to take advantage of the free sunlight. Eventually, we will start aquaponics, but I think that will wait till after we build our new house.
I look forward to collaborating with the STEEM community, so let’s swap follows, and keep this thing going!
