@suitcasemama and I love Indonesia. Happy to give you some advice on Bali. It really depends on what kind of traveler you are. If you're looking for beach and tons of other tourists (including lots of Germans!) and clubs, you'll want to set up in the Kuta/Seminyak area. If you want something a bit more chill, I'd definitely recommend heading to south Bali, especially the Bukit Peninsula. The beaches down there are definitely more beautiful and dramatic and relaxed. Think more surfers, less clubbers. Rent a scooter for $5 a day and explore!

Most tourists also head up to Ubud as well, although it's gotten very crowded lately. If you want something off the beaten track a bit, check out north Bali, where very little tourists go.

Lombok, the next island to the east, is also worth considering. It's like Bali was 40 years ago.

Learn a few words in Bahasa Indonesia - Indonesians are lovely and very much appreciate the effort to speak their language.
