Welcome, scarletstar. I'd say that maybe we do essentially need stories, as they serve as part of our spiritual need to break free from the constraints of the material world. If the material realm were truly enough, we would have no need for any of the arts - I think the existence of the arts is proof that we do need something more, and that is one avenue of achieving it.

We do not wish to be bound physically - and stories help unbind us.
