My name is Roshal Maria

My Jewish roots come from grandfather Roshal Moshe , the son of a barrister who was engaged in commerce. My great-grandfather was an actor and director:

• At the end of the 1930s actor of Moscow Contemporary Theatre.
• In 1942, actor and director of Tula Drama Theatre.
• In the 1960s director of Kolomna National Theatre.

My great-grandfather’s own brother is a film director Roshal Grigoriy, as well as his sister Seraph and brother Michael.
My great-grandfather’s wife is Zinaida Kobanova, the daughter of tsar’s colonel, the regimental commander, who was killed along with his regiment at the beginning of the first World war, covering the retreat of General Samsonov’s 2nd Army defeated in East Prussia. She was an actress of pre-war Moscow Contemporary Theatre.

I would like to tell more about my grandfather.

Roshal Lev is Doctor of Arts, Professor of The Russian State University for the Humanities, a researcher and historian of cinema and cinema archival science. He is the author of the books "The World and the Game," "Dziga Vertov", "The Effect of the Latent Image", "The Beginning of All Beginnings", "Woe to the Mind, or Eisenstein and Meyerhold: double portrait against the background of the era," etc. (Prizes of the Union of Cinematographers (UC) of the USSR and the Russian Guild of Film critics of the UC of Russia). In the books, anthologies, magazines, he published more than 300 scientific, critical articles on various issues of source and archival science of audiovisual documents, history and theory of cinema, modern film-making. He is the director of more than thirty feature and documentary films, many of which were awarded prizes of national and international festivals. A number of his scripts were published in cinematographic magazines. The film scripts of "The Pyramid", "Trumpet Solo" were published as books in 1989. In 2003, my grandfather became the winner of the National Award ‘Laurus’ in the field of non-fiction films and television as the best scriptwriter. In 2007 he was the winner of the award in Moscow. He is Honored Artist of the RSFSR. He was awarded the Order of Friendship and various medals.

In 1954, after graduating from high school with honors, Roshal Lev entered the Moscow State Historical Archives Institute (now an independent division of the Russian State University for the Humanities). After graduation and until his death he taught there at the same time being a leading researcher at the Research Institute of Motion Picture Arts and teacher of the highest courses for scriptwriters and film directors, as well as a member of the Arts Council of the courses. My grandfather is an academician of the Russian Academy of Motion Picture Arts ( "Nika") and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Russia ( "Golden Eagle"). Since 1968 he was a member of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR (now the Russian Federation).
My grandfather married my grandmother Svetlana Ustinova (her father, my grandfather Sergei Ustinova went through the entire Second World War fighting against fascists) and they had two children - my mom Zinaida and aunt Anastasia Roshal.

My aunt graduated from RSUH, married and has 8 children.

My mother graduated from the RSUH and also received the 2nd higher education in psychology. She works as a psychologist helping people cope with their problems. She has as 2 children – me and my elder brother.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get along with my father since childhood. When I was 18, I decided to take my mother’s family name. This name has always been important to me. When I got a new passport with the new name, I was happy and I’m still happy today.

From an early age my mother told me about my Jewish roots and I got more and more imbued with stories about my relatives. But as it turned out, only after many years I was able to reach what the God
had been leading me to from birth.

Now let me tell you a few words about myself. I’m 26. I have two higher educations (tourism and psychology). I work on television doing layout of sports channels. A year ago I finished the second degree and started thinking about my mission in this life. I did not know exactly what I wanted to do, what I could do with all my heart, what I was keen on. I was reflecting on these issues for a long time ... In the end, I began to pray and ask the God to show me the way that I could follow. I wished to be unconditionally happy right there and then. I wished to wake up every morning being glad about my talents and self-realization in life. At that time I did not know a single prayer, so I prayed as I could, simply asking the God. One day, my prayers brought me to a synagogue. It was the beginning of my new life! I met Rabbi Abraham, told him my story (I am better with speaking rather than writing) and he allowed me to attend his classes. At the first lesson, I met women who told me about other classes in the synagogue, which I began to attend later. And then the holidays started, Shabbat, and the relevant literature followed...

After some time I felt that the habitual life that I had been leading earlier, life in society (work on television, etc.) was in conflict with my spiritual and emotional orientation and even prevented me from the new thing that was already living in me and without which I would never be able to live. My only wish is to plunge fully into the study of Judaism, adopt Giyur and serve the God. I realized that I did not only need to study in Giyur ulpan but also to enroll in Mahon Hamesh Institute. However, in order to go to college I must first learn Giyur.
I no longer see my life without the God and serving him in Judaism. Now I’m gradually getting absorbed in the study and keeping all the commandments. I want to know and keep them all realizing entirely what I’m doing and how to do it correctly.
