The easiest way to grab the attention of the Steemit community and get them to engage with you is to appeal to their ego. They are all about themselves, so all you have to do is to post pictures or videos showing them how you grabbed the attention of whatever local community that you belong to and engaged them in a discussion about Steemit, and just like that, this community will love you.

Didn't you just join yesterday? Kind of hard to judge your success at this point. It takes time.
As for pointers, I would say:
Make thoughtful comments on other people's posts. This is probably better for getting initial followers than blogging.
Vote on other people's posts and comments. Engage with anyone who responds to you.
If your goal is to make a blog that brings in money (not everyone will succeed in this), you should probably stick consistently to a theme or specific interests. People should know what they are getting when they follow your blog, and know that it is relevant to their interests.
You can always try promoting your posts and buying Steem Power if you feel your posts are worthwhile enough to justify the cost. It will certainly help in bringing attention, but there's no guarantee that you'll turn that attention into new followers.
Be involved in the community as much as you can! Visit steem.chat / steemspeak these are all key areas to get your claws into the community. You can do it!
