I was conceived by James and Katalin Ashton who proposed the concept and rallied early contributors to provide virtual land in a crowdfunding effort run by Decentraland. They soon found the two perfect collaborators with which to form a leadership team. James, Katie, Carl Fravel and Samuel Hamilton are my chaperones and they are helping me come to life.
Decentraland is a Virtual World built on standards compliant VR technologies to create a public metaverse what uses the Ethereum blockchain to provide a permanent and open record of land ownership.
The University was one of the most popular districts that was proposed. We felt humbled to have some 180 contributors provide 1550 LANDs for us to create the campus on. Our idea soon went from being something that we imagined we would lead and operate ourselves, to something that would require additional expertise and a significant amount of effort to create.

Luckily the Decentraland project has evolved and is now surrounded by a super passionate community of individuals from the far flung corners of the globe and everywhere in between. Carl Fravel was among the very most passionate supporters of Decentraland, and also the district leader for Decentraland Conference Centre. He and I have spent countless hours thrashing out the path ahead, working out how we deal with so many seemingly unsolvable issues. We have answered a lot of questions and left twice as many unanswered ones in our wake, but we have moved forward a long way. Sam recently joined us to be the creative director for the project and together we'll brave this exciting new frontier being brought to the world of education.
It will be a while before the Decentraland University MVP is ready to explore, but in the meantime, we will keep you posted on it’s progress via the channels at the foot of this post.

Eventually I hope we can get really good at evaluating ability so that no matter what level a learner is at, they can join a course and start to progress - and to continue that progression to any level they have the will to take it to.

Some questions that I've had for some time:
What kind of courses will the university offer?
I'm picturing myself sitting in a lecture room besides many more students listening to a professor give a lecture himself; being able to make questions live. Is that a correct picture of the future of the project?
Are you thinking about partnerships with established universities so they can offer courses at DCL?

The University will offer a mix of learning mediums- live classes, self-study learning and collaboration. The self study interactions will be basic in the early days. I think the social / interactive end of the learning will take place 'in world', but users will also be able to access other kinds of VR content from within the Decentraland University classrooms.
This is a virtual world , so your avatar will be in that lecture room and you will see the avatars of other people. You would be able to make questions live. But there will be other models as well.
Yes most definitely thinking about partnerships of all types. That clearly would include real world universities, but I would say that there are some blockchain startups in the education space that are doing some very interesting things. We have already reached out to a couple and have a few more in mind.
