This tells the story of a single man's battle against overwhelming odds to save one life
Hi all,
My name is Kamil and as a part of my introduction I would like to share with you a story of a single man's battle against overwhelming odds to save one life. English is not my main language, so I apologize in advance for any errors etc.
It can be difficult to keep a positive attitude especially now when the world is full of bad news. The endless reports of thieves, bombers, murderers, terrorists, wars, racists, and bullies is enough to make us lose all hope humans are capable of one day living in complete peace and harmony.
It happened today nearby Karsibór island in Poland.
Photographer Krzysztof Chomicz during a tourist trip around Swinoujscie, in the middle of a big mud puddle noticed a small grey dot.
It was an eagle trapped in quicksand, awaiting his slow death.
Despite Chomicz's efforts to rescure this majestic bird, he was unable to reach it. Not giving up he called firefighters for help as they are well known in Poland for helping animals in need.
> Firefighters rescue deer from the middle of the frozen Vistula river.
> Firefighters rescue a cow trapped in the ice hole.
> Firefighter rescues a rabbit out of buildings during a fire.
> Firefighters perform CPR on cat rescued from fire.
The dispatcher sent two fire engines to help Chomicz but unfortunately despite their hard efforts and good intentions, they were unable to rescure the bird as it was too dangerous due to quicksand.
At this stage, majority of us would give up, but Chomicz started to plan the third and final approach.
He even considered to rent a boat and give it a try from the lake side but he had to dropp the idea as the formalities would take too much time - using a boat in reserve is prohibited. He knew that time is running out as after the sunset mud will harden making it impossible to save the eagle from the trap. He had only one chance and in his last attempt he contacted a local news website asking for help. Within minutes from posting a group of people came to rescure armed with long ropes and polystyrene. It took Chomicz an hour to move 30 meters.
Finally, terribly tired and exhausted, he managed to reach the trapped eagle.
At the beginning, the bird did not understand the intent of his savior and jabbed his arm hard but after a while he began to work with him.
Thanks to Chomicz and group of people of good will from Swinoujscie, the bird was rescued and is under the care of a veterinarian.
Soon he will fly again in Wolin National Park.
I dedicate this post to all people of good will around the world!
