Me and how I found out about Steemit

After registering for the Steemit event on eventbrite, I still had no idea what Steemit was all about, the caption of the message broadcasted by @kenkarmah was what engulfed me :

Put your ideas into cool MONEY

Well... I do not dislike cool money, so I registered, though I had my doubts, thinking it was some get-rich-quick scheme.

My name is Shuaib Abdulgafar, an Electrical Engineering Student of The University Of Ilorin, majoring in Computer Systems and Control, an armature web developer and a brown-belt Karateka (one shot off the big deal).

After being embattled with a series of Examinations in school, I was homesick, I longed for real food.

The meet-up day finally arrived and I had two choices viz:

1. Choice 1
   • Go home
   • Eat
   • Sleep

1. Choice 2
   • Go to Steemit meet-up
   • Learn what the Steemit thingy is
   • Go home much later

Well...

Man shall not live by bread alone

I decided to attend the meet-up half-heartedly, and it was a blast !!! awesome speakers, @Jalasem @autofreak. It turned out not to be mind blowing, Steemit is basically a social media that allows people to interact, it however differed from the traditional medium in that rewards are offered for posting captivating and interesting content. I had always thought I had a hidden writing talent, but I'd always been too lazy to put anything down in writing, and here comes an avenue that might even pay me.

I realized there and then, being a Steemian isn't all about the money, there's this aura of originality in it, unlike other social media, people will only like your posts if they make sense and seem original, I also learnt how strictly Steemit shuns plagiarism by flagging contents that are plagiarized. We were taught to always use plagiarism checkers like https://www.smallseotools.com to test contents for plagiarism before proceeding to post them, to avoid soiling our reputation on Steemit.

The speakers explained the nitty-gritty of the steem workflow ranging from account creation to posting content to cashing out.

Steemit concepts like the SBD (Steem Based Dollars), Steem and Steem power were also explained in details in corellation with other steem platforms like https://www.utopian.io , https://www.steemprojects.com , https://www.d.tube and the likes.

All in all, the steemit meet-up was a thriller and it tasted better than the best pounded yam i could have eaten... figuratively

I hope to use Steemit and it's platforms to improve my writing, social and developer skills
