Dowry means money or property that a spouse must pay to his wife her husband when they get married. Dowry system is one of the vicious systems that are prevailing in our society. Poverty is the main cause of dowry. Negative attitude towards women, dependence of women, attitude for establishment, impact of social corruption are also responsible for this social vice.

We find that wives are often tortured not being capable of giving money or wealth to the husbands. We often read in newspapers that newly married girls are tortured in all possible ways. The impact of this system is more harmful in the remote villages of Bangladesh which are totally deprived of the touch of modernization. Obviously, dowry system is very disgraceful. However, to eliminate this social evil, one cannot remain satisfied with mere laws or enactment of some rules. We have to change our outlook and orientation towards dowry system.

Narrow mentality of the greedy people should be change. Society awareness should be increased. Law should be applied for ensuring women rights. Above all, campaign against dowry is a must. And only then a dream for an educated nation will come into being.
