Blockchains in general, and Steem in particular, can be a hugeparf of the answer. Steem, the blockchain, is really "just" a secure, open source, censorship-resistant database that anyone can join. And Steemit (the website) is, essentially, just one of an infinite number of possible user interfaces. If Steemit fails to deliver a good interface product, or begins to censors or otherwise displeases their users, any of us can move on to what will almost certainly be a large variety of other user interfaces that will be made for Steem.
And, this is the important part: When we do, all of our social media history--all of our prior posts, all of our upvotes and downvotes, all of our rewards, all of our follows and followers, etc.--will already be there!. Currently, when I move from Facebook to some other social media platform, I lose all of that and must start from scratch. Not so with a blockchain like Steem.
This is hugely revolutionary. For the first time, it makes each user truly the "owner" of his or her own data. And developers work to please the owners, because that's how they get paid.
Amazing!
