The managing director of the International Monetary Fund is of the opinion that cryptomonedas can solve the economic problems of some governments. At a conference in London, Christine Lagarde told attendees that, in her opinion, "it may not be prudent to discard e-currencies."

Thus, the director explained that countries - in particular those with weak institutions and unstable national currencies - could opt for the adoption of the cryptonones throughout the word. According to his statements:

Instead of using the currencies of other countries - the US dollar is the most emblematic case - the unstable economies could well legalize and prioritize the use of cryptoactive. The preference of consumers for "easier and safer" currencies than the existing ones would be one of the motivating factors, and the scenario could be further accelerated if the crypto-currencies become more stable. "

Lagarde also mentioned that this decision is a kind of last resort, since he does not forget that the criptomonedas are "very volatile, risky, with high energy costs and its underlying technology is not yet scalable."

It should be noted that, to date, the International Monetary Fund has advocated a balanced approach to the regulation of cryptoactives, as the same position stands out in a document that the institution published in January 2016. Lagarde has also expressed its support for financial applications based on the chain of blocks, an issue that his institution has also explored at the organizational level.
