Don't lose hope yet, if your posts are not generating votes remember that this is only the early stages
Hey steemit folks, having been pretty active on here lately I've noticed that a lot of people are getting a little discouraged with the amount of votes that they're getting on their posts.
As you can see I haven't been too lucky on here yet since my first 20 bucks from introduceyourself. As frustrating as it is to see no new votes after compulsively checking on votes and not seeing much change, the thing to remember is that this beast is a wild card. Nobody knows what is going to happen yet and if it does take off like a lot of the numbers are saying it will, it's about to surpass bitcoin as mentioned in clayop's post
There is no telling where this thing could go.
Another thing to remember is that the blockchain concept could absolutely skyrocket in terms of mass adoption. Never before has there been this kind of combination in social media where people are compensated for their activity. The possibilities are endless as well. Just take yelp for example. How many people go to yelp to post? If it was incentivized there could be a lot more activity.
After seeing post after post earn thousands of dollars on the trending sections of steemit. It gets frustrating to see the same types of posts over and over i.e. bikinis, crypto. Steemit was founded on generating original content, people are finding that the bulk of that type of info is not getting rewarded at the moment. My strategy is to not lose patience and stick to upvoting the original stuff. I'm banking on the assumption that if we do actually achieve mass adoption, it will get easier to make some cash while at the same time enriching your mind with thoughtful and interesting posts coming from all types of different perspectives.

Yes, but also don't forget to invest in yourself. Buy a little Steem Power, Buy Some Steem Power Or buy Alot of Steem Power. Steem Power will earn something like 9x the interest of Steem Dollars. Although Steem Power takes longer to completely cash out, it is where the exponential returns will come from. And upvoting and writing articles will definitely help no matter how small the payout. At this point, you are at ground level with nothing but Sky. So yes, patience for the masses are knocking to be let in right now, and those with Steem Power will be way ahead of the curve!!
@jameswoods I don't think it's a waiting game. I believe you must do some homework. I believe you must also be relevant and on time. See @edreno for a perfect example of a grand slam posting while his others have been duds, or singles, maybe a double(to use baseball analogy). But also see his wallet, he is investing in Steem Power, while also upvoting others as wells as his own stuff (both pay when done right). And the More Steem Power, the more the payouts, the more the return rate for S.P. !!
