DO YOU KNOW HOW TO IGNORE?

Today, I remember two people in my life: Mr Oghiadome, under whom I once served as a teacher. He it was who said, during a staff meeting: "If I had been listening to what people say about me I wouldn't be where I am today." And that bears similarity to what my Mum always said to us her children, that you cannot with your toe dig for cricket when you're on your head carrying an elephant.

The second person is my good friend, Ndukeabasi Sampson. He once said, in a moment of deep experiential recollection, that when you're dead broke and poor, every innocent joke appears a derision of your situation.

Do you know why racing horses wear blinders? It's to disallow them from seeing sideways but only the race track! If you truly want to be happy you must learn to overlook many things.

You see, when you're broke, poor and hungry, or when you've just failed in business, relationship or lost your job, it's very easy to think that everybody is talking about you.

An innocent laughter, unintended comment or even just a silence becomes "evidence" that you're the object of ridicule!

Always remember that as long as you are true to yourself what people say behind you shouldn't be your business because people will always talk, anyway; and since you can't ever stop them from talking about you, why pay attention?
There's wisdom in learning to overlook and knowing what to overlook is the essence of genius. My friend, temper your life with some ingenuity.
