DBM 006: ON BECOMING A FRIEND!

Dear reader,

If you are going to be a friend, Be a good one, a VERY GOOD ONE!

There is a difference between being friendly and being a friend. You can be both! You should be both in fact! I won't want to meet you if you're not friendly, and I don't want to know you if you can't be a good friend.

Friendship isn't for conveniences, it isn't for selfish exploitations. It is for care, for love, for strength, for wise counsel, for guidance, for dependability, for support, for defence. For good times, yet for rocky times mostly. Through gains yet through pains inclusive. Through rights and yet through mistakes.

The kind of friend that sticks closer than a brother; that type of friend is the one that represents True Friendship!

It is not for the weak or fainthearted. Not for the quitters or Fairweather's. It is not for the doubters and unforgivers. No, it is certainly not for the selfish!

Some people are blessed with this heavy responsibility as a Gift from God! No matter what you do, their hearts are big enough to find some space for you. These people understand that "Nobody is perfect" that "Everyone's got their own problems and issues" and because of that THEY MAKE ROOM for baggage and then get to work on helping to clean up the mess they never made, just to see you turn out better EVERY TIME!

But sometimes, these golden hearts are the ones that are hurt the most. They are easily mistreated, badly rewarded, easily overlooked and ignored, sometimes are even forgotten and abandoned TILL THERE'S A NEED! And they do come around still. Not because they are robots fashioned to respond that way and cannot change their minds, but because THEY CHOOSE TO BE THAT WAY!

You need to begin to learn to pay attention to the angels in your life, who have been there for you through those times you desperately needed someone to talk to, cry to, listen to, help you, support you, encourage you, pray with you, defend you, etc. Those people that are ALWAYS there for you. The ones who would jump through loops to reach you when you need them. Those people reaching out to you every time, to just see how you are, not because they don't have their own life which you don't even reach out to find out about or even bother to care about, but because they have kept you and carry you always IN THEIR HEARTS!

Pay close attention! Celebrate these people, pray for them. A lot of them don't get to share their problems because they are too busy caring about the next person. Be attentive to those who give you attention. Nobody owes you anything! So if you get one good friend, don't take them for granted, or hurt them deliberately for any reason. True Friendship is a privilege, a rare gift! DON'T ABUSE IT!

Like the adage goes:
Make new friends but keep the old ones. One is silver, the other is GOLD!
