Accident? More blood pressure medication recalled after cancer-causing chemical found

in #informationwar6 years ago

A pharmaceutical company is voluntarily recalling blood pressure medication after detecting trace amounts of a cancer-causing chemical.

Torrent Pharmaceuticals Limited announced the recall for two lots of Losartan potassium tablets on the FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) website.

The products contain trace amounts of N- nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA), which is a substance that occurs naturally in certain foods, drinking water, air pollution, and industrial processes, and has been classified as a probable human carcinogen as per International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classification.

I read this and called bullshit on this N- nitrosodiethylamine chemical they say occurs naturally in certain foods and drinking water. So googled it and found this information.

Uses

N-Nitrosodimethylamine is primarily used as a research chemical.

N-Nitrosodimethylamine has been used as an antioxidant, as an additive for lubricants, and as a softener of copolymers.

N-Nitrosodimethylamine was formerly used in the production of rocket fuels. (1,2,5)

Doesn't sound like it "occurs naturally" to me.

Sources and Potential Exposure

Individuals are most likely to be exposed to N-nitrosodimethylamine in occupational settings such as in the rubber, tannery, fish processing, dye, and surfactant industries. (1,8)

Humans may be exposed to low levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine through the ingestion of food that contains it, such as cured meat products and smoked fish.

Other exposures to the chemical may be from drinking contaminated water and from breathing cigarette smoke and contaminated ambient air. (1,2,8)

So the "occurs naturally" in food means it's added/used in cured and smoked meats and does not come from nature. I think it's also funny they say you can drink the stuff in contaminated water. So is the article saying drinking water is contaminated all the time or what?

Here's another government website that has information on the chemical.

N-Nitrosodiethylamine is a synthetic light-sensitive, volatile, clear yellow oil that is soluble in water, lipids, and other organic solvents. It is used as gasoline and lubricant additive, antioxidant, and stabilizer for industry materials. When heated to decomposition, N-nitrosodiethylamine emits toxic fumes of nitrogen oxides. N-Nitrosodiethylamine affects DNA integrity, probably by alkylation, and is used in experimental research to induce liver tumorigenesis. It is considered to be reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen. (NCI05)

It seems to me this article is down playing the danger of this chemical and trying to say it's a naturally occurring cancer causing chemical that you can eat and drink without taking this medication. After looking at these two websites it seems pretty clear that this chemical isn't natural and is mainly found in smoke and industrial processes.

My guess is the industrial process they use to create this medication contaminated these pills and I'm glad the company is taking action to recall a potentially dangerous product. However the person that wrote this story is really downplaying the recall notice and seems to be lying or covering this up.
