"Soft kills in silent wars" How the chemical industry is killing us all.
Toxic chemicals in our daily lives are broadly accepted as a benefit to society, yet these chemicals are leading to a dramatic loss in the quality of life among the people exposed to them, which includes just about everyone.
Among some of the more dangerous and important chemicals are the fire retardants which are put in products to protect the public from the threats of fire. These chemicals are found in all sorts of products from children’s toys to beds and pillows. They are sold as being important in the prevention of fire, no one likes to wake up to an inferno because they fell asleep with a cigarette in bed. Sadly this line of propaganda about saving people who would otherwise have burned to death in a fiery inferno appears to be a blatant untruth. The industries who pedal this chemical are comfortable lying if that’s what needs to happen to keep their products on the shelf.
PBDEs in the USA have been proven to harm the health of people who are exposed to them, the studies I have been reading point to the fact that these chemicals are difficult to displace once they have been stored in our fat.
They build up over time, so there isn’t really a safe exposure level. We are exposed to these chemicals steadily as we go through our days and nights here in the USA. We even find that beverage companies put them in our drinks, despite the fact that they are known to be harmful to human life.In the last decade these dangerous chemicals have been banned, although the ban in real terms amounts to increased monitoring and a voluntary ban on behalf of manufactures.
These chemicals which are so dangerous were displaced by other more dangerous chemicals which are also marketed as fire retardants. In fact what happened is that our fossil fuels industry switched from one deadly poison to another. These petrochemicals are known to affect the development of children’s brains while in the womb. These chemicals are known to cause infertility and cancer. These chemicals are known to be nearly impossible to remove from our bodies once we have them in blood. They are present in all forms of life whether fish, bird or plant these chemicals have been found all throughout our environment. I believe they are one of many chemicals we are routinely exposed to as a matter of course in the USA. The industrialists are willing to sacrifice the wellbeing of their consumers if that’s what it takes to increase the profits for their shareholders. They keep our health and well being in mind, only so long as we maintain our consumer habits.
PBDEs and Organophosphate are among the chemicals exposed as causing massive sickness across the country and around the world, but what about the chemicals and their manufacturers who are being actively protected by government and media? What about the industries who are actively ruining livability for our planet? How many of these caustics are being released on our watch? How many times do we have to find out that we have been poisoned by industry before we remove from power those who are willing to kill us for profits?
