VENEZUELA: Conferry Anzoátegui records second ship sinking in two years.
This August 7 was reported the collapse of the Talling Auto Express II, which belongs to the state company Consolidated Ferry (Conferry) and operates in the north of the state of Anzoategui and Nueva Esparta. The boat, according to residents and some workers of the company that was nationalized in 2011 by then President Hugo Chávez Frías, had been stranded for three years.
"He spent two months in dock in the spaces of Bolipuertos (Bolivariana de Puertos) for collaboration, but the institution has nothing to do with the accident," said an official source, who asked not to be identified because she was not authorized to testify.
Alfredo Santamaría, a spokesman for the workers of Conferry, said that his colleagues fear being identified as the alleged perpetrators of the incident. He said that months ago they informed the company's authorities about the failure of the unit. In 2016 Carmen Ernestina sank in the wharf of the shipping company that is located on Paseo Colón Avenue in Puerto La Cruz. When Conferry was occupied by the State, it had 11 vessels, while currently there are only two in operation that only leave once a day.
"It will be more expensive for them to take out the boat than what it cost to repair it," said Merco Lelo, a resident of the fishing sector Volcadero, located in the Guanta municipality.
In the afternoon the recovery work of the unit continued. According to those who were in the port of Guanta, the mayor of the municipality, the official Marcelo Galvis, as well as rescue authorities of Bolipuertos and specialized teams of Pdvsa (Petróleos de Venezuela), execute a plan to get the ship afloat.
