Al-Qaeda's Job in Syria
In Afghanistan, it was mainly to plant opium and poppies, plus whatever the US could get its hands on, not to mention to create a production factory producing terrorists.
In Iraq, it was gold, oil, and ancient treasures, in addition of course to making a new hub for exporting terrorists.
In Syria, it is the geographical location to secure Israel, which in turn controls the USA, plus Syria might be the richest country in the world with ancient treasures.
Another main job tasked to al-Qaeda's offshoots in Syria, including the original FSA, was to create as much as division, hatred, enmity, and horrors within the rich mosaic multi-cultural Syrian society who've been living in peace for centuries to make it impossible to co-live after the war is settled.
This task was to ensure a number of ethnic-based cantons would emerge out of a divided Syria to justify a Jewish Israel in the south. A multi-cultural secular country bordering Israel is an existential threat to the racist Zionists dream there.
Wars waged by the West are always planned very carefully to exploit the maximum they can during the attack, consuming all that weapons and munition so the Military Industrial Complex would be kept happy, searching for oil so the oil lobbyists would be satisfied, opium and different types of drugs so the majority of their population be drugged out and the drugs cartel would be satisfied, and naturally to serve Israel.
