Sun Temple: The living Marvel
India has a rich heritage. Every monument in India is a masterpiece in itself, the Sun temple one of the masterpieces. The Sun temple or Konark temple is one such wonder which you would find interesting. The name Konark derives from the Sanskrit word 'Kona' and 'ark' which means corner and 'The Sun’ respectively, and the temple is dedicated to Sun God Surya.
The Sun temple was built by the King Narasimhadeva I of the Ganga dynasty, with the help of 1200 artisans, being selected by him personally from all over the nation, and the foundation of this temple was laid in 1243 A.D. And was completed by 1255 A.D.
The whole temple actually symbolizes the chariot of the Surya Deva. This temple chariot is bound with 24 wheels which represent 24 hours and there are 7 horses which represent 7 days. It made in black granite and black pagodas.
A massive magnet was placed at the temple top and every two stones of the temple are sandwiched by iron plates. The idol was said to have been floating in the air due to the arrangement of magnets. But as it always happens, the colonist took away the magnets and the temple lost his magnetic ability.
The main attraction of the temple is its twelve pairs of wheels located at the base of the temple. These wheels are not ordinary wheels, but tell time as well – the spokes of the wheels create a sundial. One can calculate the precise time of the day by just looking at the shadow cast by these spokes. Imagine how much time and coordination would have happened between the astronomers, engineers and sculptors create something like this, 750 years ago.
Every single piece of the Konark Sun Temple is covered with sculpture consisting of deities, dancers, musician, and erotic scenes. people have ignored these hints and thought that these were carvings of Hindu Goddesses. But all of these created for some valuable and scientific purpose.
