Inviting Suggestions For India Specific Contests!

in #india7 years ago (edited)

Hello everyone. I've been thinking of running a new contest in addition to the Steem.Chat contest. We can do it weekly or bi-monthly. I'd like it to be specific to India so that it's in-line with some of my community efforts here.

I'd also like to have some giveaways if we get some sponsors along the way. Therefore, a community specific contest makes sense to me now as we're growing steadily.

So please drop your suggestions in the comments below. I'd love to know what you think. You are welcome to drop as many ideas as you want to.

Prizes: 12 SBD for the best Idea/s and 8 SBD for the second best and 5 SBD for the third best idea.

If you feel there are some great contest ideas running already, feel free to highlight them as well. I'll consider them. I'd love to see what can be adopted for a regular basis. Since this will be specific to India, shipping won't be an issue I guess.

I've been considering this for sometime now. As usual, I will sponsor the prizes as there aren't any sponsors for anything India specific. It would be awesome to have anyone come forth to sponsor prizes for a specific contests. It doesn't have to be SBD/Steem everytime but something tangible. We can make it fun as we go.

Hopefully when the prices retrace back to higher levels, the contests I hope will yield better response with greater community participation and the rewards could go up as well.

As with everything, we can only start small and scale.

I'm really looking forward to seeing some interesting inputs so kindly give it your best shot. I would like to run this mid-week so that there's a short gap between the Steem.Chat contest and this one. So please spread the word on this so that we can get off to a good start.

If you are from India, please be sure to fill the form in the links in my signature so that we can build a list of active users from India in the days to come.

As a parent, I feel that the present generation is not getting enough of grandma stories which glorify the Indian past and mythology and so on. I suggest that you put a contest where people get rewarded for writing stories about Indian history, mythology and the like in their own language and of course provide a translation in English. It should be a bilingual post with references and so on.

What led me to this?
I asked my son about cultural beliefs and he said he was a skeptic. I do not want the future generations to be not aware of the glory of India. He knows more about the marvel universe than Sivaji and all. Sigh

All the best for your future plans

You just spoke out my mind. The Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata are legendary. I remember and relate to so many incidences from Mahabharata in my daily life. It would be a shame if these epics are not promoted enough in the next generation. Worth a thought.

thanks, I hope Indian writers give this a thought

Hi @firepower : I have a suggestion. Indian science community is sleeping(with respect to steemit)! Yes, to be honest, a lot of quality science writers are there in India. You can see that in StackExchange and quora etc. But in steemit, we lack Indian science writers who write quality and original stuff. I think a contest for Indian science writers will do a great boost in this area, which will allow more people to join the community. We have tonnes of talented students and researchers. I think if this idea gets realizes, it would be a boost to Indian steemit community in general. I am also a member in #steemSTEM community. They encourage regional content too (I meant any local language science article), but with English translation.

My firm belief is that the value of STEEM is tied to the quality of the content which we steemians deliver. So if people like you encourages projects like this, it would be a great boost to the platform in general. The potential in India is yet to be tapped. Thank you. (Regarding contests and prizes from my side: I am trying to open a contest for my next science article. And one more thing: If I win this contest, I can use that money for the prize too :P )

Yes, it's true.

Indian science crews aren't properly introduced into steemit, I think.

The main difference between Quora and steemit is - Quora has a good audience for almost every type of category. And, there's no need of followers to get some like-minded encouraging viewers.

Some months ago I posted this https://steemit.com/science/@prabin/the-mysterious-sound-of-space-can-you-hear-them-7b7c0130d9956 on steemit. Unfortunately I was discouraged after getting mere audience views, keep the rewards apart.

Multiple times I tried to convince myself to return to steemit and make my own audience by giving some time. But since we writers live on client works and I am making my living out of writing, I can rarely risk of some days going unpaid.

I would appraise this suggestion for science category to @firepower.

I promise to get back to steemit if it there's a little encouragement else I gave adjust my timing otherwise to return to steemit.

@firepower did you check? Any upcoming contests?

The competition should be to organise steem meetups in the contestant’s city or locality. The participants needs to post pictures of the meetups, and the stuff they discussed in it.
This is a great way to promote steemit and also it will strengthen the overall Indian steemit community. Not many people know of steemit right now, and the fact that social networking can be rewarding will definitely excite people.

I love this idea. Hope somebody reads this as firepower never responds to comments.

You read it, and If you are the only one who believes in this , that’s enough, but I can bet you’re not.

I would love a folk tales contest. We come from different states with a rich culture of folk tales. This contest will help revive the culture of lost folk tales and encourage more fiction on steemit.

Hi @firepower, I can simply say that it's a great idea. Please find my proposal regarding the same.

Problem Statement : Building a community and promoting quality content.

Goals : Involve a greater number of people participation.

The Idea : Running a contest where users showcase the unique diversities present around them,
either a picture(needs to be original and strictly as per a format) or be a simple post .

Topics : Culture,Food,Facts,Historical Place,Legends,Experiences

Supporting Reasons : The Steemit Indian User comes from different places and is a group of people from all ages. Hence a contest should engage all of them, and at the same time be realistic too.

Contest should relate to people so that they can propagate things which are already present around them.

I like the your contest idea, Great! You describe well and uses also.

I second your suggestion @saksham. We have a country with diverse traditions, culture, geographical and social conditions. Different topics can be taken to showcase or describe them and whoever does it the best way, wins the contest. Topics can be like place in your city/ village/ hometown, tradition, cloth etc... Each above topic can be taken one by one.

If you start with very specific contests like art, science, memes etc., then you would be restricting it to a very small subset within the Indian steem community. Which isn't a great way to make a contest popular.

To get most people to participate (at least initially), keep it open. You are allowed to post within that week (assuming weekly contest) a meme, blog, photos, text, travelogue or anything else in your field of expertise, with their being only one applicable condition. It should be about India.

Want to write a poem, go for it. It should be about India. Want to talk about Indian politics sure. Want to come up with some crazy meme which will have everyone in splits, awesome.

This way we can get top quality India specific content.

To make life easier for you. Have 3-5 judges from different fields of expertise. So it will be easier to narrow down the winner and make the participants feel that it is a fair contest.

Hi @firepower ,
We have Dtube, Dlive, Dmania, Dsound that work on steemit blockchain. But I won't prefer any sort of contests making use of them as it will again make it suitable only for a small number of people. But the writing contests are different which is inclusive in nature. Hence mainly creating content via writing and using other mediums along with it would be the best practice in initial days.

India has immense potential..Our cultural diversity is vast, We are speaking 100s of languages, We got a rich literature works dating back to 1000s of years, It is in our land that a number of world religions took their first breath....See, we have no dearth of ideas as is the case of any other parts of the world. As the contests that we are planning are within our demography, We can handle many simmering topics.

Why can't we come up with our ideas on moves made by our Union/State governments that would have a pan India level effect? Nothing can deter us from doing this as a contest as POLITICS is and should an integral part of every human. Prizes need not necessarily to be in SBDs/Steems. In last month I saw an African community distributing keyboards and OTG cables to those who have no laptops with them. We can offer good books and many other stuffs as the price.

Many people from India suffer here because of ENGLISH .contests can be splitted into regional languages along with translations..I know it is double work, but translations has to be mandatory even if it is a broken English (People like me who are from south india don't know hindi).

We have the potential to create original science, cultural and unique quality contents. When someone search something about India on Google, Greatest contents should be from steemit. That's where the success lies in!

I should say, only original and quality contents have to be selected for curation and price distribution. A single person can't do this, so a group of people is necessary!

Great Planning @firepower 👍
You should start contest in this way :

  • First Week : Blog writing about specific topic decided by you or host ( Topic should related to India’s History, Politics, Rituals, geographically, Administrative service etc).

  • Second week : Talent hunt, in this contest Indian users can show their talent in Drawing (Manually), Design using software. You or host of contest will decide the topic/object.

  • Third week : Photography of Indian nature, Indian Roads, Indian famous places but have to write at least 200 words about the photo/place/nature.

  • Fourth week : Food recipes.

Thanks !

very good suggestion

Thanks 🙏

I will suggest a post about notable act of kindness they have received either on steemit from a steemian or from the real world.

Lets face it we have all come someone that touched or impacted on our life one way or the other without them having any need to.

Since the contest is india specific, the participant provide or find way to get the prize to them. And the contestants who are obviously steemian get to win some steem/sbd in the process.

I think it is a way to appreciate and circulateact of kindness. I believe this kind of contest will touch and affect someone's life.

You can call it act of kindness or other suitable names.
