US border deaths incident granted conditional release
was an illegal operation with a tragic ending. The man accused of human smuggling in connection to this case was detained here in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and on Monday, Steve Shand appeared by video link in a Minneapolis courtroom where he was granted pretrial supervised release with numerous conditions. Shand is charged with one count of transporting or attempting to transport illegal aliens. Last week, the Florida man was apprehended near the border in Kitten County, Minnesota. Border officers pulled over the 47 yearold who was driving a van down a dirt road with two other undocumented Indian nationals
Officers encountered another five people walking down a road in blizzardlike conditions. Later on, four others, including an infant and a teenager, were found frozen to death on the Canadian side of the border. Court documents show that Shand, who was originally from Jamaica, was a cab driver with financial issues. 2018. Documents show he filed for bankruptcy more than three years ago.
It's also believed that this incident may be part of a larger human smuggling operation. Shand didn't show much emotion during today's proceedings and waived his right to a probable cause hearing. Now, he's under numerous conditions, including surrendering his passport and all travel documents, and he can only stay in his home district in Florida and can only travel to Minnesota for legal proceedings.
