How to compromise on immigration.
As unfortunate as it is, American politicians have been unable to find a solution to the immigration problems. And is often the case in democratic governments, the problem is not finding a solution, the problem is politics. Politicians on both sides have dug in and the Far Right and Far Left are not willing to budge. I would like to think their entrenched stances are due to heartfelt, thoughtful convictions. However, the more likely case is they are more worried about re-election and love nothing more than pandering to the extreme parts of their base voters and trying to dramatize the issues in a way to bring moderates to their side. They are not interested in what is best for the country, only what is best for their political career. Sure, they can gloss over their positions by claiming they are representing their constituents (and yes that is often true). But sometimes you have to do what is best for the country, not strictly your constituents.
So here is a look at reasonable immigration reform plan that will require compromise on both sides.
Issue #1: Dreamers.
Dreamers are "illegal immigrants" that were brought to this country as children (or even babies) by no fault or choice of their own. Most dreamers consider themselves American, are completely integrated into our society, and consider America their home. Many do not even know anyone in their home country, and some do not speak any language other than English. Polls consistently show 70-80% of Americans support a path to citizenship for Dreamers. This is not a "Republican" or "Democrat" issues, this is an American issue. The majority of Americans support this by a broad majority. Fix it, this should not even require compromise.
Issue #2: Path for Legal Immigration.
Most conservatives support "legal" immigration, but feel very strongly that all immigration should be "legal". The problem here lies in the barriers to legal immigration. There must be a more accessible route for work visas, etc. and then a path to citizenship if you are able to prove you are a law abiding member of American society. This includes jobs ranging from manual labor to tech workers to doctors. Both sides need to come together to fix "legal" immigration. Because as long as that is broke and there is a very limited path to legally immigrate, people will go around the law.
Issue #3: Border Protection.
Border protection (building a wall, more border agents, resources for fighting drug trafficking, more resources for immigration and deportation enforcement) is important. This also extends beyond our borders. If we do not support Central American countries in their fight against gang violence and drug cartels, people will continue to seek a better life in America, legally or illegal. But border security is not going to work if Issue #2 is not addressed. Conservatives need to give way on Issue #2 and Liberals need to give way on Issue #3. Fix the broken immigration system (Issue #2), then enforce it (Issue #3).
Issue #4: Illegal Immigrants already in America.
Although it is hard to get an exact count, it is estimated that there are currently around 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States today. This is a problem that is not going to go away. There does not have to be a path to citizenship, but there has to be a way to address this issue without mass deportation. It is not feasible, practical, or in some cases compassionate to deport every person that is in America illegally. A compromise to both sides would include giving them legal status so that they can pay taxes and abide by American laws, without giving citizenship. Though a path to citizenship should be available, assuming they are in good legal standing, pay taxes, and integrate into American society.
Immigration is a problem in America and will continue to be a problem until the above issues are fixed. I hope that one day politicians will be able to put aside their personal agendas return to a brand of politics where the word "compromise" was not a bad word.
Let me know your thoughts. I would love to hear them.
