When The Media Says "Experts" They Mean Paid Corporate Shills (Part 39)

Former U.S. senator for Maine and secretary of defense under Clinton, William Cohen, has made numerous media appearances and written numerous op-eds in major newspapers over the past several years touting the supposed benefits and downplaying the drawbacks of not only increasing the cap on H-1B visas but outsourcing IT jobs to India which he claims creates twice the number of jobs in America. Neither he nor any of the media outlets that have platformed him for his supposed expertise on the matter have had a modicum of honesty to disclose his financial ties to Tata Consultancy Services, an Indian insourcing company that he named in a C-SPAN broadcast as an example of an H-1B visa recipient that creates jobs in the U.S. and which pays him through his consulting firm The Cohen Group. His shilling went far beyond paid media appearances. In 2018, Cohen used his connections in Washington to host a dinner for congressional staffers at a prominent DC hotel where his paymaster’s chairman was in attendance along with a former Obama official who went on to work for the Cohen group during Trump’s first term in office, but was later appointed as the U.S. ambassador to China by the Biden admin. Ethics disclosures in 2021 revealed that Tata Consultancy Services was one of his many former clients at the Cohen Group. During Trump’s first term, a former governor of Michigan and Energy Secretary for the Bush Admin, Spencer Abraham, made the media rounds pushing the admin to not reform the visa program using a CFR white paper and op-ed in the Des Moines Register to tout the supposed benefits of Indian IT companies. The newspaper failed to disclose his employment as a paid foreign lobbyist for the National Association of Software and Services Companies founded in Delhi. Apparently being a former cabinet member is prerequisite for being a high profile paid shill for foreign IT firms.
