Florida has been hit by 110 hurricanes during the time period from 1851 to 2004, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Andrew was huge, but #Irma is much larger ... Andrew was a Category 5 hurricane when it hit the Bahamas and Florida in August of 1992. “Irma is about twice as big as Andrew,” AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski said.

Irma’s wind speeds are tied with the second-strongest maximum winds of all time for an Atlantic hurricane, matching a 1935 storm in the Florida Keys and Hurricanes Gilbert (1988) and Wilma (2005).

The all-time record for strongest winds in an Atlantic hurricane is 190 miles per hour, measured in Hurricane Allen in 1980.

Irma will likely make landfall in Florida as a major (Category 3 or stronger) hurricane, the first such landfall in almost 12 years.

Although the National Hurricane Center projects Irma will make landfall as a Category 4 storm, which would be the strongest storm to hit Florida since Charlie in 2004.

The last major hurricane to make landfall in Florida was Hurricane Wilma, which came onshore on Oct. 24, 2005, near Cape Romano in southwestern Florida.

Hurricane Irma expected to join the list of infamous hurricanes that have hit Florida, but now with its 20 million residents.

Since 2005, the population in Florida has increased by more than 3-million people. About 1.9 million people lived in Miami-Dade County when Andrew hit. Now about 6 million people live in South Florida's three counties and another 4 million people live in threatened Orlando and Jacksonville.

Latest update- Sunday: Irma's full force will hit the Florida Keys, the chain of islands off the southern tip of Florida, early Sunday morning before sunrise and begin to move through Florida.

God Help Us!!! I'm hoping #hurricaneIrma is simply being overhyped by the weather channel and liberal media.... Considering it has dropped to about 150mph and may still weaken more over the mountains of Cuba this could be good news to somewhat brighten up all the bad.

Sadly, the electric company is also saying no power for two weeks or more after #HurricaneIrma passes through due to having to rebuild the entire infrastructure ... so this may be my last post for a while since I am in the path.

Are you in the path? Be sure to have the 'app' that will help you most before during and after the storm.

For me it is the Hendry Glades Public Health Preparedness app
• Share your status with your selected contacts with the push of a button.
• Receive critical emergency alerts via push notification.
• Locate Hendry & Glades Counties' emergency shelters.
• View up-to-date evacuation route maps.

You might also want to look at the free app, called Zello Walkie Talkie, lets your phone communicate as a two-way radio so long as you have a network or Wi-Fi connection.

Regardless of the app you choose, HAVE ONE. It's just as important as your other 'must have' items on your hurricane preparation list.

The governor of Florida has stated if you can't get out of any "mandatory evacuation", whether for fuel or any reason at all, call 1-800-955-5504, right now! He said they will do anything in their power to help anyone in a mandatory evacuation.

The gov is literally staying, don't drive out of state. he's saying to go inland so stop telling people to go north. At this point, the best bet is to go inland to friends or shelters.
