Hurricane Harvey targets Nuclear Power Plant
The Nuclear Power Plant known as South Texas Project is at the direct center of Hurricane Harvey. Why are nuclear power plants still in existence and how many more of these need to have core meltdowns as is likely to happen here. Even if this power plant somehow dose not manage to melt down it is yet another reminder to all of us that we are only ever just one disaster away from killing off a massive amount of the human population and at the very least creating a lot of sickness for absolutely no valid reason. This nuclear power plant has been shut down now before the hurricane hits but that dose not mean that it could not still melt down. Even when the reactor is shut down, the thermally hot and radioactive fuel inside the reactor will quickly overheat and cause a nuclear meltdown if not cooled down.
Because there is no off site power there now, reactors are switched over to backup emergency diesel generators. These large generators provide enough power to operate a fewer set of reactor safety systems. Each reactor is required to have at least two emergency diesel generators onsite. Should these backup generators fail due to overheating, mechanical failure or the of the diesel fuel going bad, etc. a smaller set of vital reactor cooling instrumentation and control systems would rely upon power from large on-site battery banks. The failure of both onsite and offsite power supplies will result in a total blackout for the power plant.
I would like to note here that if the water gets high enough or is able to damage both of these systems there is the very real possibility of this occurring.
After 3hrs of 0 power being supplied the nuclear meltdown process will begin and texas will officially have it's very own nuclear disaster to deal with. So who thinks nuclear is still safe and what's it going to take for us to band together as human beings and let our governments know clearly we don't want these in our world.
That would be TEXAS...not taxes.
Anyone have an update on this situation? SCARY!!
I don't think the nuclear plant ended up being damaged but this is just a really great example of why we need to be working on getting rid of these very dangerous power plants.
