Veronica Mars: Your favorite blonde highschool private dick is back in action!
You've probably heard that Veronica Mars is coming back. One of the best things about all these stupid streaming services getting so big is that they're reviving a lot of good shows that got canceled by stupid executives that wouldn't know a good show if they canceled ti to put on more reality TV.
Now all the old fans of Veronica Mars, and the ones that have discovered it since, get a change to see another season of the show.
Veronica Mars was a pretty awesome show. Of course, I actually didn't even know that when it was on TV. I thought it was just some dumb girls show. The advertising just utterly failed on it. The credits utterly failed on it too. The song and credits just suck. It's portrayed as another teen highschool drama. It's not. The main character is in high school when the show starts, but that doesn't mean that's what the show is about.
Imagine if a show was about a super hero and they marketed it as about high school, because the super hero happened to still be going to highschool. Yeah, that's kinda what they did with Veronica Mars.
Veronica Mars is about a girl who's strong and independent and doesn't take shit. She also happens to be a private eye to helps her dad who's a private eye, and used to be the town sheriff. Her being a private eye is a lot more consequential than her being a high school student. Of course, what you or anyone does as a job is not the end all be all of their existence.
Anyone one thing about Veronica Mars tells you basically nothing about the show. A strong independent girl who still goes to high school and helps her dad with private investigations goes through life and helps her friends with finding out who killed who and who raped who and who is who's father. Does that really tell you anything about the show? Maybe a little bit. But it doesn't tell you how you'll end up watching hours on end of this show that's probably just a combination of a dozen tropes that are pretty common in TV & books.
You like those dumb shows about the kid investigators, you'll probably like this. You like shows about strong female leads, you'll probably like this one. You like shows with nice timing and narative voices? Maybe you'll like this one.
I myself am re-watching the series, getting ready for the new season, because it is a pretty killer series. I might have missed out on it when it was first out, but I won't miss out on the new season.
Used under fair use. (source)
Uh oh, there goes another week of my valuable time. Binge watching the next season, after catching up again, since it was a long time ago I lost a week of sleep in the first run. But all I can say is, GREAT. I loved that show...as you say, SO much more than they gave it credit for. The movie wasn't as good, but still pretty decent. Thanks for the heads up.
I shall never understand the folks that put out and take down shows. So many classics go by the wayside. I loved Jonathan Ames Bored to Death, same with Good Girls Revolt, but of course, they killed those right off quickly. At least The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Bosch are coming back. Writing for movie TV has SO improved. And led to many a day for folks all over the world going without a shower ( :
Thanks for putting this out and the heads up. Now I gotta go buy a gross of snacks and more Root Beer...
Did you used to be friends?
I often think they tend to cancel the best shows rather than the seriously bad ones. My guess is that these often are more expensive ones, and if they don't get popular fast enough, possibly even due to a failure in advertising, they cancel them. Same goes if there's a season where the popularity goes down, such as due to a mistake in theme with the writing. There's also the whole "reality shows are cheaper" excuse. Maybe the profitability of reality shows is so good they get stupid.
I wish, I'm a big fan of Kristen Bell. Just been a long time ago since I watched the whole thing, in a very short time, in it's entirety. Ah, the binge. Weeds was NO sleep.
I'd like to think it's all about the money, but am afraid it is other reasons sometimes. And as varied as to reason. Though I think Good Girls Revolt was backlash to some of the politics going on.
I suppose it IS expensive to produce a show. So it needs to really take off, if you want it to make any money. To me, it's the story of art since we first started doodling on cave walls with charcoal sticks. If there's not enough money in it to keep it going, the quality seems irrelevant to the powers that be. Though I'm pretty sure V.M. had a huge following, and lots of input vs. canceling. So what gives, I dunno.
Can't say as I'm a big reality show fan. Haven't seen any, actually. But good movies, I can watch all day long. Yikes. Plus, they've put Green Acres on for the summer. Uh oh...double yikes.
Due to recent stories that have come out about various things that have happened behind the scenes in Hollywood, you do kinda have to wonder how many shows fell apart because someone was a creep or an asshole. It's not like everyone's professional all the time in real life. Sometimes it just becomes impossible to work with some people. Maybe one of the actors has a drug problem. Humans be humans yo.
I think I kinda prefer thinking that it's all the fault of idiots in positions of power though, canceling shows because they can't recognize quality.
But there are certain situations that just don't make financial sense though. Like when they canceled Firefly. The show didn't get popular nearly fast enough. But then, after that, fans got together and pretty much forced them to do a movie...which was then the top film in theaters for over a month. It was a bang out success. So why didn't they bring it back? Kinda does feel like maybe we aren't hearing everything. Maybe there were problems that we didn't hear about.
Does kinda beg the question why there aren't more non-profit film companies focusing on art. After all, it's actually fully possible to still make a shit ton even at a non-profit. In some cases, you kinda have to raise how much you're paying people, since you're not allowed to make profit. You could also still make agreements with investors for them to make profit, even if your company just rolls all their profit back into production and salaries.
I think the best thing we can possibly do is figure out a way for us in the crypto world to get in...because there are two things we love, decentralization and profit, and I don't think it would be impossible to figure out a way to make something that allows us to support artistic vision and profit from it at the same time as keeping centralized entities from ruining it.
The other option is if we could somehow get a ton of people together to support things with our collective wallets.
Those could be the same thing though.
Sounds interesting...
This is such great news though I'm afraid the spin off won't be as good as the original. They did a movie a few years back and it wasn't as cool. Vmars was one of the coolest shows though, a little high school, but mostly a bad ass pi show.

It's actually surprisingly being done as just a new season, not a spinoff. I hope that means it will be closer to the original.
Well let's see how that Works out then. Holding thumbs!!
