On HR, recruiting & retaining people
Considering things I know/do/learn about (web design & development) I am contacted almost every week by recruiters/companies (on LinkedIn, Xing, mail, jobs websites), so I am learning some things about recruiting.
Over the weekend I had an online discussion with some friends regarding what makes someone choose a company and what makes them stay there or look for something else. Please consider that most of the people involved in the discussion have some kind of connection with IT and the digital word, and the group age was between 22 and 39.
During our discussion a lot of things came up, but we decided to place them in 3 large categories: 1. Benefits (salary, healthcare, gym membership, free lunch, etc.). 2. Environment (colleagues, managers, company, general work atmosphere, etc.) 3. Development (growing opportunities, technologies used, trainings, etc.)
So we concluded that for someone to chose a workplace or stay there he needs to have covered at least 2 from the 3 main categories. You can have a crappy salary, but a great manager and exciting opportunities to grow. Or a great salary, a great team (going with a smile to the office), but little opportunities to develop.
If only 1 category is covered, that person will probably start (slowly but sure) to look at other opportunities and motivation to work is fading away/not accept an offer from that company. If none, I think the outcome is obvious. Maybe this will help someone around here.
Good post. I absolutely love this post. Continue the good work!
