I am perhaps too late to enter the contest I intended, but this sourdough bread is just too good not to share!

@knowledge-seeker had an amazing photography contest this week featuring any and all foods made on the homestead. Please check out some of the entries here. For my entry, I wanted to share a valuable discovery:

Easy, and I mean REALLY easy, homemade, authentic sourdough bread.

I’ve always been disappointed by what I call “fake” sourdough bread recipes, which include about a 1 cup of sourdough and all fresh flour to bake.

I want all of my dough fermented, and broken down for easy digestion, and yeast free. This recipe does just that. It’s so forgiving, you don’t even have to be exact. I haven’t ever measured, and it turns out every time.

Directions

Add the following in a bowl:

1-2 cups of bubbly sourdough starter
1 cup water
1-2 cups of fresh flour, whole wheat or white, your choice
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt

Mix well. The batter will be like very wet dough, or thick oatmeal, in consistency. Pour into buttered baking dish or bread maker. Let sit for 8 hours or more. It should be wonderfully risen and bubbly to bake. Cook as you would normal bread.

The result is deliciously tangy and moist.

Heck yea! Love me some sourdough. I have a habit of toasting all my bread though.

Now, post a recipe on how to make a sourdough starter :)

I can send you some. Did you know you can dry it on low, like fruit leather, except drier and take it anywhere?

Dry....the sourdough starter? Interesting! It's bacteria, so that makes sense it would survive that. I would love to get some :) I buy my sourdough currently from Aldis, and it's pretty good, but homemade has to be better, right?

Yup, that's how I brought it from Wisconsin. Quite resilient. I'll have to dry some out again and then I can send it :)

You just made the cutoff for the contest! Your sourdough bread looks delicious. Thanks for including the recipe and how your did it. Great Job!

Thank you, that is amazing! Every saturday we head to town and we usually eat breakfast there ( at noon). I love a 10 oz. container of pine nut hummus and a loaf of sourdough!

What an interesting combination! I'll have to give that a try :)

Stacie D and I both think it tastes just like pizza!

Looks yummy! By the way, I've heard that toasted bread - toast - is more digestible.

Thanks. I never knew that! I heard that raw honey also helps with digestion.

This sourdough bread looks really tasty! Thank you for sharing the recipe! I choose homemade over anything, there’s nothing like fresh ingredients. My mother-in-law loves sourdough bread. I will be sure to show her this recipe :)

Thank you. I agree. And nothing like the smell of homemade. Hope you try it. Soo easy :)

You’re very welcome! Oh yes the smell of homemade is Amazing!!! I think maybe I will try it with my mother-in-law :)

Would love to make sourdough. I currently am fermenting several vegies, and turn out about a quart of milk kefir a day. Could you post your starter recipe please? Thanks

I actually started with a starter I purchased online. It was well worth the initial investment. It's been through many moves, freezing, dehydration, neglecting and still produces a great bread!
