Building An ARK!? Preparing for Hurricane Irma on a FARM!
Preparing for the Worst but Hoping for the BEST!
What a whirlwind of activity we have had! Scrambling and hurrying to try to beat the storm! The wind has been fierce all day, some local reports of 30 MPH here in Georgia already! We have so much stuff and so much to do! Being a farm there are lots of animals and things that go with animals. We had to tie things down, put stuff away in the barn and in the old three sided garage we don't dare park a vehicle in, but most importantly we had to make sure our animals were safe! THAT was easier said than done!
We are one of the lucky ones because we are not on the coast and we are dealing with a much smaller storm than those in Florida. We are forecasted to have a Category One or Tropical Storm by the time it gets here Monday or Tuesday. Heavy rain, wind gusts up to 70 MPH and Tornado activity are HUGE threats to us. We will likely lose power, possibly for an extended period of time. My biggest concern in all this is that we have big, old trees near our house and barn. Both structures are very strong so we should be okay no matter what.
Getting all these animals into the barn was no small task!
We had stalls ready for goats because they sleep inside so that wasn't too difficult. Might just need to add more bedding as the rainy days inside add up so they don't have to sleep in poo. The solitary turkey was easy to bring in, he seemed happy to get out of the wind. We captured Miss Dick when she came looking for a treat and gave her her own big dog kennel and later added another Muscovy friend.
The chickens are in portable tractors but there is a lot of them and they are not easy to move long distance. Ryan spent a great deal of time building a new tractor to put our "chicks" in so the ducks could go in their pen.
The ducks were super complicated because they are in a big area with a ChickenNet Fence from Premier One. So I had to shrink their area until I could grab them and put them in a big playpen we use for chicks and temporary housing when needed.
Our Partridge are in a very heavy cage that we were afraid of damaging if we tried to move it so Ryan screwed metal roofing sheets all the way around it. They should be fine now! It will be easy to unscrew when the storm is passed and the bottom is open for ventilation.
Getting all the animals safe and sound was quite the task but we managed to do it somehow and feel much better now! Of course dinner wasn't had until 10 pm... What we do for our animals!
Here is a video we made of our preparations on our Daily YouTube Homesteading Vlog!

You have an amazing job preparing for the incoming storm. The animals should be will be safe and dry in the barn. The family will be safe, dry and well fed during the storm. I hope the members of your family down in Florida are all safe and sound. Upvoted and resteemed.

This post really made my morning. As an animal lover it's so hard reading about people leaving their pets to die in the storm! I know you have think about your family and other humans first, but there's always a way to protect the animals too. You are doing the "Lord's work!" Great post! @suicidalviral
Thank you! I was bound and determined they would be protected! My babies, ever
Awesome job rounding everyone up! Nice to see some cooperation from the critters, too. That makes the whole operation much smoother.
Stay safe! Sending positive vibes that it dissipates quickly.
Thank you, we are experiencing high winds and rain now
Just got done reading your last post about your concerns. Glad to know that they have been addressed!
Good to see you and your family and animals safe. I hope there isn't major flooding or winds. Best wishes!

That can't be an easy job trying to keep the animals safe from the storm. From the news ive seen it looks like Irma is losing a little force, hopefully this keeps up and you don't get hit too hard
It was hard, I'm sore today but they are safe
