Fall Tasks on the Homestead (VIDEO)
OH how I LOVE Fall. After the mild drought (that we're still in) and the prolonged stretches of 90+ degree summer weather in our area of Missouri, being able to wake up to a cold-crisp morning, pull on jeans and boots, and go out to do our morning chores with a nip in the air is truly GLORIOUS.
The tasks on the homestead are changing with the seasons, too. Now that it's cooler, we can leave our goats out to forage all day (instead of bringing them in during the hottest parts of the day like we'd been doing), we don't have to worry about the rabbits overheating, and the chickens are delighting in the huge array of seeds that are now up for their tasting pleasure. Likewise, I can bake bread again (hurray!), Andrew can put on his wood-cutting safety gear without roasting, and there is a huge amount of wild bounty to start foraging.
Also we can make hot chocolate every night. PERKS OF BEING ADULTS, haha.

You all are the cutest couple. I just want to squish you up. What a great deal on the spinach. I do the same thing. If I find a killer deal on produce, I buy it all up and preserve it.
I'd never seen the pvc on tie-outs before. I really like that idea and think I'll give it a go when I have to tie my goats out. As always, I look forward to your next post.
Awww, thanks. I do love that man. And we're always on the lookout for deals! The sad thing is, the spinach is GORGEOUS. Like...not a single wilted leaf. I hate thinking that it would usually end up in the dumpster just because the arbitrary "expiration date" has elapsed.
And yeah! I got the idea for the goat tie-outs from my childhood jump ropes. The ones that had the long plastic beads never got as badly tangled as those that were just rope. Thanks so much for reading!
Just have to say, that is super smart having that PVC pipe on your goat leads. I've had the sad experience to find goats who have strangled themselves. I bet that works pretty well.
Oh, that would be so sad to find. Thanks! It was a sudden idea I got when we were first figuring out how to keep goats without having fences. I remembered my childhood jumpropes that didn't get tangled as much when they had long plastic beads on them, and so the idea seemed like it would work on a bigger scale!

AND YES to spinach. It's usually something like...$6 a box (which we would never pay). But knowing they're going to toss it because the "magic expiration date" has elapsed makes us want to give it a better end than the locked Walmart dumpster.

Thanks! This is the first time we've ever tried to raise young birds, and even though we've lost some to predators early on, these are our tough survivors. I love their awkward teenager shapes. Can't wait to seem them free-ranging like the rest of our birds!
