I Waved Goodbye as He Walked Out the Door

in #homesteading7 years ago

Already deep into his phone, he didn’t look back as the limo service car pulled away.

Ok… That’s a little over-the-top dramatic. He was just heading out to his company’s hub in Paris and he was only going to be gone a week. I really don’t mind. I use the time on other projects that I’ve got going. This time I was doing a little autumn gardening and of course I was going to steem.

Tuesday I went to town and did some errands… I picked up that comforter that was at the laundromat, some drugs at the vet (for the dogs… don’t be so quick to jump to conclusions!), and did some light grocery shopping.

Wednesday I stayed home and I worked on steeming all morning. I was trying diligently to find out where that upvote went that @hellowhale was supposed to have made to @mortongregoryss post the night before when suddenly insideous evil took over my screen!

Hmmm… this has happened once before when the router slowly went bad.

Proof of signal strength!

I grabbed my phone and checked the wifi signal strength. I had all 5 bars lit up. That seems good!?

Well… I have a lot of tabs up on steemit. Maybe it’s tired from the effort?

I rebooted my computer. It’s supposed to automatically connect on boot-up but no dice! I decided to check my other devices. No joy on either my phone or ipad browsers and even Alexa's acting stupid!

Hmph I can’t even call up the address up of the computer that is hard-wired to the router. That one works fine!

I turned the router off then on again…

I haven’t figured this out yet but I have noticed that this kind of problem only happens when Doug is a far away.

I can’t wait for him to get home. Having the WiFi go down is extremely inconvenient but not quite as inconvenient as the water heater that went out 2 days before he left. When he gets home he is going to help me replace it (or I’ll help him).

Update:

He just arrived home. Who would have guessed that we have 3 routers all chained together and all 3 had to have their power cycled?

One of them predates the Italian renaissance.

And @mortongregoryss never did get his upvote.

We have all our modems, routers, splitters (or whatever they all are) that go to 3 x PCs and provide Wifi to more - all are plugged into the same 4 pin plug. So I just crawl under the desk, turn one switch off at the wall, count to 20, turn it back on, and crawl out again. If that doesn't work, repeat but with a count to 40.

And if that doesn't work, turn off the mains power to your house, go out for lunch, come back and switch it back on again!

It's easier that picking it up, shaking it, putting it down, then checking to see if anything's changed!

We're rocking two routers and a network hub here, but we may add another for the outbuilding. I get lucky because I keep picking them up at the dump.

Glad the problem wasn't with your ISP. When we go out it's usually because Comcast has screwed something up on their end again.

We have satellite but in the summer it gets a little flaky (maybe the sun?) We have so many routers it's mind blowing. For our regular, less expensive internet connection we have the 3 mentioned, I now know that we have 2 for the more expensive back-up satelite connection, we have a relay in the work shop, the power out building, and the generator building next to the stream. It gets a little complicated but it also makes it more comforting should I have a problem out there or need emergency services. I can't imagine how scary it would be to have to use the more dangerous tools with noone to find me until someone missed me 3 days later.

Congrats on finding the routers. We have a large number of internet sites that we shop for cheap equipment but I remember shopping with my dad at the local dump. I think we got our first family bicycle there!

It sounds like your IT setup is pretty complicated. Simple living comes with a cost, huh?

We are so lucky to live in a town that contains the region's major transfer station. The swap-shop is phenomenal - always full of good books to read, computer parts, more dishware than you could ever need. Last week I picked up a Herman Miller office chair there, and it's the most comfortable thing I've ever sat in.
