Biggest logs yet on the new sawmill - and other farm happenings.
We finally had a great and dry spring day here and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to make some sawdust. Or man glitter as my wife (@qberryfarms) calls it.
I have been on hiatus from Steemit for almost a week. It's been the first real break in nearly four months. I feel like I walked away from an addition for for a while. With spring here is was bound to happen. After two days of clearing down limbs and another two on the sawmill I have really felt like a sore old man and needed a break. It was really nice to get a couple of logs through the mill though. I love to see the wood grain inside after sawing one open.
It was great to get to test out the sawmill with some really large and heavy trees. It was very hard to get them on the mill properly and roll them over when I needed. I actually had to use the tractor to get them to roll over when needed.
This one below was a very heavy white oak log over 26" in diameter. It made two 6x6 posts, several slabs and many 2x4 and 2x6 boards all over twelve feet long.
This white pine, was over 32 inches in diameter and 16ft long. It was nearly 3000lbs. This one made six posts, a couple of 2 inch thick slabs and a dozen 1x12 boards.
If two days of running the sawmill is not a good enough excuse for missing steemit last week. I also spent three days cleaning up tree limb debris after our snowstorm. 15 inches of heavy wet snow left me with driveways and our gravel road blocked by limbs. It took quite a while to get the huge pieces cut up and hauled off to piles. Anything large enough to go through the sawmill was saved for that purpose. Here's a bonus. We know spring is at our door when the skunk cabbage pops up Their flowers remind me of a Jack in the pulpit. There very neat plants and pretty as well, but they don't call it skunk cabbage for nothing. This stuff smells horribly if you break open a a leaf or stem. Do you have these where you live?

It looks like you are in the lumber business now. Wish you were closure I would hire you to cut some lumber for me.
Ha. No, this manual mill is too much work for that. I just want to make and build a lot of stuff out if wood. I'm sure I'll have some friends and family occasionally want something milled though. 🙂
Welcome back- only so much time in the day, sounds like you were busy. The last stand of winter - we had some wild weather last week too - snow, hail, rain, wind storm, a lot of on-grid people lost power. This week is looking warmer though. As far as lumber goes, I still remember my confusion and disapointment the first time I measured a store bought 2x4. Inches? :) Looks like you have some solid lumber for your projects.
Thanks bud. Yep, the crazy weather here continues. We have a few days a week over 60 and at least one day a week of snow for the last 3 weeks. Same thing this week. I'm trying to settle into a reasonable groove here on Steemit.
Yeah, I also remember the exact day as a teenager I learned that 2x4's are not 2x4 inches. I was incredulous, I couldn't I understand why we keep calling them that and wanted to change the nomenclature but alas, it didn't stick.
