THANK THE LORD FOR FRIENDS AND SOCIAL MEDIA - VISITING OUR FIRST SEED EXCHANGE

Social media. It helps to share knowledge, foster and grow communities and create dialog.

The Backstory
After a few weeks attending our new church, we meet our friend Lydia. Lydia and I share a similar hobby; gardening. We were new to the area and did not know too much about the Kansas City area, any groups or clubs, etc. So Lydia began telling me about all the gardening groups, native plant groups, animal groups, etc, etc that she belonged to on Facebook. Before you know I was getting plugged into all these groups in my area, region and state!

The Group
One of those groups in particular was the SeedSavers-KC. SeedSavers-KC is a group of people that (like the name of the group) saves seeds. For the life of me I wish I could remember her name, but there is also a lady there that hosts classes either every month or every other month on how to properly save seeds. One of these days I plan on attending those classes. Knowledge gained here will save the wallet later!!

Father-Daughter bonding moment
Anyway, I took my middle daughter to pick up our friend Lydia and we attended the seed exchange that SeedSavers-KC hosted. It was at the Anita B Gorman Conservation Discovery Center. When we got there they had an owl exhibit going on too. The building was really cool. Lots of things for kids to do. I definitely need to go back and take my kids there!! Never miss an opportunity to have these moments with your kids. You are forever building positive memories for your children! Plus when you see them smile, it warms the heart and soul!

The Seed Bandit is born
Being completely foreign to me I just followed the line of people to the seed "swap meet." We signed in, got raffle tickets, and dropped off our donation of seeds. Wow there was a lot of people there!! Once we figured out how things worked, my daughter went nuts grabbing seeds of this, that and everything else! She even got a "Devil's Claw"! Man that thing looks wicked! But the guy behind the counter said it produces pretty flowers. Sooo I guess we are planting Devil's Claw now.

We got Marigolds, Sunflowers, 4 O'Clocks(????), Rose Mallow, Bald Cypress, Elderberry and Fig Cultivars, Lettuce Mix, Goldenrod, Catnip, Devil's Claw and Egyptian Walking Onions. I think Anessa did really good at her first seed exchange.

The Devil's Claw...hmmm. It looks scary enough to plant around the house to keep burglars at bay!!

The big take away for me was that we got Elderberry and Fig Cultivars, Anessa enjoyed getting all the seeds to plant for our garden and around the farm, she got to see some owls annnnnnnd chase some geese! It was truly a great father-daughter experience!!

This week I have to go through all the seed packets she grabbed and find out the planting instructions for them so she can help me plant them. And so she can enjoy the beauty of what she picked!
