drystack step - one over two and two over one

in #homesteading5 years ago

Jocelyn showing you how to build a dry stack stone step! First, you want to prepare the area for your stone step by clearing out the dirt, and raking through it to collect the rocks and gravel. You'll be using these rocks to build your step, and sharp gravel is key! You also want to lean your dry stack step into the slope of the hill you are building it on, so that if it falls anywhere, it falls into the hill. Orient your long rocks into the bank, instead of in line with the wall or step. Stagger your rock layers 1 over 2, and 2 over 1. So on, and so forth. Making sure it's level as you go, and adding rock shims as needed to be sure your step is even across. Add gravel to the sides and back of the step, as well as in any cracks, for stability and drainage. Then rake sand over the top, and voila! you have a natural, dry stacked rock step!
