SIMPLE, PORTABLE ANIMAL PEN

in #homesteading7 years ago

I love learning from others, and trying new things out!

While we were getting our new dog, I noticed something. The folks who gave us our dog had assembled a quick and easy temporary animal pen to contain the puppies while people were coming to pick them up. After checking it out, I thought that it might work for us too.

A SIMPLE VIDEO OF THE PROCESS

BASIC IDEA AND CONCEPT

For us, we've got a lot of "untamed" land to tame, which includes removing the current plants and replacing them with some more useful ones. While I could just bulldoze it, using the animals seems like a better option for many reasons. It'll leave the soil undisturbed, give the animals free food, and they will fertilize with manure as they go. If I can just move a temporary pen, it'll take a lot less effort than building a "real pen" where I don't need one to be long-term.

The basic idea for this pen is to take four kennel panels, stand them on end, and clip them together with carabiners. I was really impressed at how well this worked, and think it'll really help us. It took us only four minutes to assemble this, and that's with my six year old and five year old helpers!

For now we've placed a few of our young goats in the pen, and they seem to really be enjoying themselves. Since I wanted to use kennel panels for our poultry pen anyway, it'll be a good use for them for the time being. While they are a bit expensive at about $40 USD each, they should last for a couple decades and save us a lot of effort in the long run.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Hello @papa-pepper

You are proud of what you do and that makes you an awesome blogger. And when one learns that your five and six year olds have learnt enough to be helping, makes you a throughly amazing dad, you know. Keep inspiring. Regards to the kids....

Thanks man! The children are a blessing and know how to help out for sure! You're right, it takes a real investment in their lives, but the ROI is incredible!

🤗✌️

this is very good, I really like this color of your new dog.
the fur is very beautiful and looks very smooth, the dog is also a very faithful animal.

Thats cool,
I have a dog which sometimes needs to be kept put, I never taught of a temporary pen.
Your lesson is well taken, and would most probably be implemented.

What a Great Idea to let the Animals do lots of Work and they get Fed Too......

Fantastic solution!

Cattle panels. Everyone's favorite all-purpose building supply around the homestead!

You can make fences, temporary fences, trellises...anything else?

very well I love they are very good perso <3

What a great fast any easy pen. We use pallets since we get them for free and only have to pay for screws. My concern with this type of pen would be the corners stability to protect from predators. So far our pallets have worked but have to be changed out and checked frequently.

Yeah, these are already in the perimeter fence as well, so the real predators like bears, mountain lions, coyotes and wild dogs shouldn't make it this far...

Simple and useful!

The problematika may be complicated, but the dikutip can be simple. Thank you for sharing.

Been humble and learning from others both young and old isn't an easy thing but greatness is been achieved if one can humble himself... I'm very happy you humbled yourself to learn and I'm very sure you archived greatness.
