Farming in Appalachians week 10
Week 10
The High Country Seed Library is located at the Watauga County Public Library which is on 140 Queen St in Boone North Carolina. This is right downtown just minutes from campus and most of what the town of Boone has to offer. They are the watauga county seed saving library, A collaborative partnership between the Ashe County Public Library, the Watauga County Public Library and Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture. It is supported by the Ashe and Watauga County Cooperative Extension Services. They do what they do to promote open pollinated seeds and the practice of saving seeds. This is important to not place ourselves in a situation of being dependant on others for the seeds we need to grow our own food. They also do this to provide seeds to the public. They give packets of open-pollinated seeds that are available for community members to check out, for free. They hope to encourage more home gardners by doing this and just ask that patrons who take seeds to return some from the crop you grow. If they haven't been fortunate enough to have a lesson on seed saving from chip and don’t know how to save seeds The Seed library hosts seed saving workshops to teach the public.
Soil testing is important as it can help small farmers save money on nutrients and fertilizers by not applying excess. Often times older farmers apply lime and other nutrients regularly when it is not needed. Apart from this it can help you produce higher quality crops. It is provided for free by the NC extension office if you get your samples in early enough. If you wait to long it will cost you approximately $4 but when it comes to saving a crop of tomatoes from blossom end rot It seems worth the cost. Ensuring your plants have all the nutrients they need to grow big and strong seems like an obligation to any farmer and on a ecological view potentially even abusive not to if those plants were brought to life with your help. Free soil testing should be used every season and recorded to see where your soil has come from and where its going. One of the main reasons for sparking my interest in farming was the growing concern for soil loss and soil fertility declining. In the future this will become one of the most pressing issues. Without quality soil that's fertile and full of nutrients and biotic life the plants above will not be able to grow and provide fruit for us to eat.
Blackberries are some of the most nutritious berries you can eat. They contain high amounts of anthocyanins that come from the berries pigment. They are antioxidants that help your body rid itself of toxins that build up from the artificial environment most of us live in. They are either erect canes or trailing vines and they take two years to establish themselves before they bear fruit. This was interesting and something I wasn't aware of as I plan to grow berries on my land. The best recipe I know is from my childhood. 1 empty bowl and kids go fill with berries. Step 2 pour sugar on top and step 3 is dig in! Very simple. Very good!
