Rhubarb is part of our permaculture project.

Rhubarb is a herbaceous perennial growing from short, thick rhizomes. Rhizomes is a modified subterranean stem of a plant that sends out roots and shoots from its nodes. It produces large poisonous leaves along with fleshy edible stalks. The stocks are used mostly jams, jelly's and pies. The rhizomes are also used by some to make medicine primarily for digestive complaints.

A picture of a large rhubarb plant in full flower. We have rhubarb planted through out our permaculture farm. So far we have had no problems with the poisonous leaves all of our livestock tend to leave it alone and the leaves make great mulch. Rhubarb does best in zones 3-8 as a perennial and as a annual in zones 9 and up because of to much heat and no rest for the rhizome. It grows well in part shade to full sun in most soils.
