It certainly can be. Once I got eyes on this fire I was too nervous for multiple reasons. We were the only fire around, so we ended up with about 12 trucks on that fire within 20 minutes of calling it in. Also we had had rain a few days in a row, so although the grass was still dry, it wasn't bone dry like it was just the week before, and because it started at the top of that ridge, I wasn't too concerned about it making down to our area fast, because I learned with our last big fire, fire doesn't go down hill nearly as fast as it goes uphill, unless a tree that is on fire breaks away and rolls down igniting everything below, which I witnessed a lot of 2 years ago.

I have only been close to a fire once. We had all the smoke and the flames came within one-eighth of a mile. It might have been me in the heightened state of worry, but I swear we could feel the heat of the flames. I evacuated with the kids and my husband stayed to help fight the fire. We were very lucky and between firefighters (and many volunteers) and the rain that came, our place was saved. Months later I could still smell the charred trees...
