Date night on the Homestead!

in #homesteading7 years ago

Today on Homestead Homebodies it's Date Night....so.....we're going to make some Date Squares!

Our recipe uses 16 ounces of dates, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 cup of water, 2 cups of all purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, 1-1/2 cups of butter, 2 cups of brown sugar and 2 cups of oats.

We start by cutting the dates into smaller pieces to be sure there are no pits in our mixture.

Once that is done we combine the Dates, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and the water into a saucepan. We bring it to a boil, reduce the heat and cook, stirring often until the dates are soft and can be mashed with a fork. Set the mixture aside.

In a large bowl blend the flour, baking soda and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the brown sugar and oats. Do not over mix. Your mixture should stay crumbly!

Next we butter our baking dish and press in half of the crumb mixture. Then we gently spread our date mixture over the bottom crust. Sprinkle the remaining oat mixture over the date filling and press it down with your hand.
Bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees.
Cool completely, cut into squares and enjoy!

Greatly appreciated, thank you!

Hello friend, this recipe is very good, instead of sugar moerena can be used white?

You can make it with white sugar although it may not have the same rich flavor....🙂

Looks like it would be mighty tasty. Might have to give it a go for a replacement on the old banana bread for the kids :) We haven't been able to make the ole' banana bread lately as the kids eat the bananas to quick but that's a good thing! Much appreciated!

Might be time to put the kids to work on a banana plantation!!!!! It would mean more quality time for you and the wife, the kids would have a much better appreciation for how bananas actually get to your house to become bread.....and there is even a remote possibility that they like it so much they stay and you two become empty nesters much sooner than you could ever imagine!!!
In all seriousness though, thanks Brother! (Don't tell the kids what I said)

it is good to know one of my mentors @brimax is a homesteader

How are things going over on your homestead?

Still having issues which will soon be resolved. I had to abandon the plans cos of school. But I will soon resume

Good luck, and stay focused!

Dates are real energy packets.
And oats are full of fibers and makes a healthy digestion.
So its seems a very awesome dish health wise.

There may very well be health benefits in a desert like this!
