Preserving the Harvest - Strawberries

in #homestead7 years ago (edited)

Today we had a great harvest of strawberries so it is time to start preserving them.

We simply cut the end off the strawberry them place them on cookie sheets. Then we place them in the freezer.

This makes them easy to use for smoothies or fruit salads at a later date. One of these days my wife may make us some strawberry jelly but this is her favorite berry so I don't push the issue. Hopefully we will get some other good fruit harvest for jelly and wine!

Those strawberries look amazing. Fresh homegrown ones are the best

Thanks, it is nice pick the bright red ones.

I feel the same way about raspberries! My husband once mentioned I should try making jam with our raspberries and I replied I would never waste such delicious berries to make jam! Plus, it’s not often a berry lasts long enough to even make it to the house.

LOL - everyone has their favorites!

After leaving them alone for two whole years, rabbits or something ate almost all our strawberry plants! They were really starting to produce, too.

If you have any left you can save them. As you know they multiply so fast!

You're right! I should save the ones that are left. If it isn't too late!

Any idea what variety of strawberry you have? Do you prefer certain variety for flavor or firmness? Finding all these strawberries fresh in the field must look like paradise.

I believe they are Braeburn variety. They are plants from the previous homeowners grandparents! They are smaller but really sweet.

Hmmm maybe wife needs to do a recipe on making the smoothies ;-)
(Hope that helps get ya a smoothy)

Too funny! Stephanie is good about sharing her smoothies!

We've got another 3 weeks before there's strawberries here. All mine are frozen, except for the ones we eat!

I tried growing some from seed this year, failed, as not one plant came up. Luckily the wife of a friend of mine is separating hers and said I could have a few plants. Hopefully I will get something from them this year!

They are hard to grow from seeds, glad you got some plants! Soon you will be blessing others with your plants.
