RE: Venison or Vegetation the constant battle
When I was living in Prineville, the deer were AWFUL. But, a 5 foot fence wont do it for ya. I wouldn't waste the money on something that short. I'd at least go for a 7-8ft fence - if you're gonna do it.
One thing I did do, that worked for most of the season was hang Irish Spring soap up around the garden. Worked until the deer got desperate at the end of the season. I would give it a go, it's cheap soap. Haha. Some people grate it up and sprinkle it around also.
The other way I have heard that works (I was working on a veggie farm one summer) is a regular fence (short), but then on the inside about 2-3 feet in, they put up white wire, it had electric capabilities, but they never turned it on. This double fence idea goes off of the deer, apparently the deer cannot judge the distance. I didn't experience this myself, so I cannot say for sure. But these farmers never complained of them.
I was kind of thinking that 5ft would be short, and they could jump right over! we will look into 7-8ft for sure.
Hmm hanging up soap? I'm willing to give it a shot. How did you hang it? (I don't have the time to grate that much soap up!)
I would have never thought of the double fencing idea. I will run it by Blake!
Thank you so much for taking the time to give me real world advice, I appreciate it so much!
