Cultivating Creativity
Caroline Myss says that one of the most important functions of life is to create. She asserts that many ailments and dissatisfaction with life can be traced back to a block in the flow of our own creativity. She believes that one of the most important skills we can teach our children is to help them learn to ask themselves, "how am I managing my creative energy?”
As an unschooling family, we have the privilege of filling our time with activities that support our values. I have to do and be what I value. Therefore, I must be a human who manages my own creative energy in order to raise humans who do too.
My partner and I made commitments to spend time creating as often as we can. My partner has discovered a passion for forging. He takes waste materials and other finds and upcycles them into beautiful, functional pieces that he sells on his Etsy shop - Wild Man Metal Works
Our oldest seedling is following in his daddy’s footsteps. Seedling 1 cut, polished, and drilled the hole in this found slate rock all on his own to create a unique decoration.
I write, paint and experiment in the kitchen. I love finding ways to use what we have, and turn things into something new. My youngest seedling has taken up that mantel. Seedling 2 loves to take bits and pieces of items from around the house and cut and glue and sew them into creative sculptures and pieces of art.
We all spend time together at the pond where we live, and can often be found painting, sketching or building together.
As a former public school teacher in North Carolina, I tried to give my students opportunities for creative expression. I was trained in the Art of Collaboration through The North Carolina Museum of Art. I learned how to help my students engage with art both inside and outside of my classroom. These skills and techniques now help me to cultivate creative energy in my own seedlings. I am enjoying this so much! I take the opportunity to learn from other homeschooling families as much as I can.
