Holy days

For the Jews, Sabbath is the day of worship and rest, the day God rests after creating the world. Sunday is the day of rest and worship for Christians. Jesus was resurrected on Sunday. Friday is the day of worship for Muslims. It takes place in the Qur'an, where Friday is the holy day.

The Bible states that the last day of the week is Sabbath. In non-sacred sources, Sabbath coincides with today's Saturday. Thus, Jews and Christians started the week from Sunday. But for Russians Tuesday is the second day. Some nations accept Monday as the first day. International standards are also adopted on Monday the first day of the week.

The international standard ISO-8601 enumerates every week of the year. Some of the days of a week may be within one year and others within another year, in which case more weeks are counted during the year in which the day belongs. The first week of the year includes January 4, or the first Thursday of January. Years usually consist of 52 weeks, but the years starting with Thursday and the remaining years starting with Wednesday include 53 weeks.

There are no records that the seven-day week cycle has been broken. Calendar changes and reforms did not disrupt the seven-day cycle. The seven-day cycle has been intact since Moses and even earlier. While some sources claim that ancient Jews occasionally use a calendar with an extra Sabbath, this claim is probably not true.
