Idocrase, The Beauty of Aceh Gemstone
Hi steemians, how are you? I hope everything is fine. I haven't made a post for a long time. Now I am back posting a little hobby discussion. Especially this is a hobby that is very loved by men. I will discuss about the famous gemstones in Aceh, Indonesia. Namely idocrase.
About
Idocrase is a rare gemstone, usually found in shades of blue and sometimes yellow-brown or pastel green. Stone Idocrase consists of a group of mineral silicates, which are defined specifically as aluminum-silicate calcium. In most cases, the name 'idocrase' is used when referring to the shape of a gemstone, while 'Vesuvianit' is used more in reference to coarse crystal shapes. The name 'Vesuvianit' comes from Mt. Vesuvius, the name of the volcano where idocrase was first discovered.
The name 'idocrase' comes from the Greek words 'eidos' and 'krausis' which each translate as 'form' and 'mixed'; refers to crystals, which often indicate a mixture of other mineral forms. Idocrase was first identified in 1795 by the famous German gemologist, Abraham Gottlob Werner. Werner was also the first person to find chrysoberyl which is a group of other minerals in gemstones which are very well known as their cat's eyes. Werner is also the mentor of Friedrich Mohs, the creator of 'Mohs' scale of violence' and the definition of the scale is still used today.
Identify
Idocrase is a complex mixture of metals, oxygen, hydrogen and fluoride, which are classified as aluminum calcium silicates, with specific gravity ranging from 3.32 to 3.47, more or less the same as tanzanite. Idocrase has a refractive index size of 1,700-1,723, slightly lower than spinel and garnet. It is slightly softer than quartz, ranked 6.5 on the scale of Mohs's hardness. Crystal Idocrase is formed in a tetragonal structure. Large forms are common and can be very difficult to distinguish from grossular garnets. However, grossular garnets are much more difficult.
Origin and Source
Idocrase or Vesuvianite is found in a number of locations in the world. It is known to form in skarn (gangue silicate or rock waste) and limestone deposit through the geological process of contact metamorphosis. From some of the most famous collections of quality gems are from Quebec, Canada and Mt. Vesuvius in Italy. Other important sources include the Russian Urals and China, Norway, Pakistan, Sweden, Switzerland, Kenya, Tanzania and the United States (California, Arkansas, Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire). ... and it seems they don't know that there are also many Idocrases in Indonesia.
More recent discoveries actually come from Kenya and Tanzania which are rumored to have found some gemstone Idocrase with transparent quality is very good for the market, although in very limited quantities.
California (USA) produces green cabochon or bacan, known as 'Californite' or with another name 'California Jade' (perhaps because of its strong resemblance to jade). Even found also in The Jeffrey Mine in Quebec, Canada which produces a type of Idocrase with a good appearance, yellow-green stone Idocrase, as well as a variety of green emeralds, chromium-rich violets and very rare.
Idocrase is very popular with collectors, but is less known to merchants and jewelry users. This might be due to the fact that entrepreneurs rarely process Idocrase into one of the main jewelry products for women such as necklaces, bracelets, pendants and other types of accessories. Likewise with the Idocrase in Indonesia, most of them are still in the form of grains embedded in a men's ring frame. A promising business opportunity with a wide open market share if processed into a more attractive and classy form of jewelry.
